There were also diseases involved during this time such as syphilis and small pox. For many of the Spanish colonies, the economy was based on mining silver and gold and the plantations focused on Native American labor to farm cash crops like sugar. Sugar started cultivating in large amounts at the start of the 16th century. (Lecture 2)

English Colonization: With this new english settlement, conflict arose between the impeding English and Native American populations. After the terms of service for indentured servants expired, there were more people entering the agriculture workforce. This also meant more conflict between Native American populations because more people were moving westward.
(Lecture 2)

1600s Slavery: Why Africans?

With the enslavement of Native American populations, many Native people were dying. This also led to many wars between Native Americans and colonists. Additionally, they were able to escape because they knew the land. Due to many conflicts and problems that arose with the Native American population, colonists needed to find a labor force to help boost the economy. They turned to the African population as a solution. (Lecture 2)

Analysis: Even during this time, Africans were radicalized because they were thought to be stronger and able to withstand longer working hours. As a result, many Africans were subjected to inhumane working conditions which was detrimental to their physical and mental health. This radicalization also was the cause of poor working conditions as Africans had to work all day and even during hot days. This treatment of Africans was not only inhumane but they were not treated as humans. With this work that they did for white colonists. This also contributes to the class struggles seen throughout history as colonists had power and created a superiority framework system.

1700s Chapter 2 Mays Analysis: The Issue with the Founding Fathers

As Mays describes Thomas Jefferson, a prominent figure in U.S. history and a Founding father, "It is tempting to think of Jefferson as a complicated man, who literally toiled with his belief in freedom and democracy, and his enslavement of Africans and his policies that dispossessed thousands of Indigenous peoples. Jefferson was no doubt a brilliant thinker, but he was an enslaver and settler, and only believed in the equality of white men.
Analysis/Significance: This point that Mays brings up about slavery and the creation or foundation of this nation is rooted in racism. The Constitution itself codified slavery and even allowed for its progression. While the upbringing of the United States is historic, there are also many issues along with it. People need to criticize and critique the founding fathers. While they were important figures, they also need to be held accountable for their action such as being involved with enslavement and owning slaves for their own selfish benefit. Furthermore, many legal and government documents include elements of slaver which suggests that these documents were not written with the intention of protecting all people living in America. Rather, this was protecting the rights of mainly white men and establishing a superiority of other minority groups within race, gender, and class. These documents fail to include indigenous and black people in the writing and if they were included it was in a radicalized manner. This silences these groups and promotes the idea of white supremacy. This supremacy establishes a hierarchy in society and creates a system that is rooted in racism where people are obligated to follow.

The North American Free Trade Agreement was the world's largest free trade agreement. With this agreement, there were "claims that the trade agreement's benefits would 'trickle down to Mexicans, over 1.3 million Mexican farmers were pushed into bankruptcy within the first decade of NAFTA." (US Wars Abroad, Wars at Home Chapter 2). Furthermore, "the decimation fo thousands of varieties of native corn is a form of gendered genocidal violence, disproportionately impacting Indigenous matriarchal culture and the livelihoods of Indigenous women harvesters." (US Wars Abroad, Wars at Home Chapter 2)

Analysis/Significance: In a sense, this agreement was a way for the United States to indirectly colonize Mexico and colonize Indigenous populations in Mexico. This agreement was a way for the United States to take control of the agriculture and the mining industry, which leads to the displacement of millions of Indigenous people. It also disrupted the Indigenous women culturally because corn is sacred and this influx of need of corn cash crops is disrupting the legacy of maize. This is demonstrative of the United State's capitalist system as profits and commerce are some of the main drivers in the decision making. Culture is a part of people and gives them a sense of community and belonging. This greed from a capitalist society does not take into consideration the livelihoods of minority groups and instead pushes them further into poverty and strips them of Indigenous culture.

1800s Caldwell Analysis: Stereotyping and Racialization of the Chinese population

As Caldwell put into terms in his "Negroization of the Chinese Stereotype", "for all legal purposes, the Chinese had become a negro" (Caldwell).
Analysis/Significance
Caldwell's argument is justified because the wya in which the white workforce and white people treated Chinese people showed some similarities to the treatment of black people. Chinese people were radicalized as good workers. While this racialization should have been a benefit for the Chinese population, because they were not white they were give lower work wage compared to white workers. Furthermore, Chinese workers were also degraded and dehumanized and were treated as a tool to benefit the economy. This behavior towards Chinese workers is similar to black people's experiences in slavery and even after slavery. They were dehumanized and racialized as stronger. Caldwell's argument is about the shared experiences of oppression that these minority groups face against white supremacy. Both groups have had to suffer experiences working for white people and for white people's benefit. This also maintains the supremacy of white people because they are either the bosses or are paid at a higher wage. White people were protected simply because they felt their position in society was threatened with the influx of minority workers. While the argument for justifying capitalist society is that those who work hard will succeed and their work will show, this is not the case because capitalism and this hierarchy rooted in the system is based on race. These preventative measure against having all people having the same wage demonstrates the corruption in capitalism and the power that one's race can determine their treatment in society and the quality of their life.

The Civil Rights movement during this time had many conflicts for may African Americans in terms of ways to progress desegregation and providing equal rights for African Americans. Especially with the Cold War, desegregation was also linked with defeating communism. This meant that African Americans needed to get involved with the United State's international issues in order to gain help from the government. This also meant showing support for the Vietnam War because many worried that opposing the war would lead to limited access to the president. However; many African Americans did oppose the war. The NAACP defended the war as "an attempt to merge the civil rights movement with the peace movement" (NAACP).
(Lecture 15)

With the U.S. joining the war and Japan as a new enemy, there was a lot of hostility towards Japanese Americans. This hostility was mainly radicalized as this treatment was not the same towards Germans. Furthermore, Roosevelt's Executive order 9066 for Japanese internment furthered the discrimination that Japanese Americans faced. Roughly 120,000 Japanese people were placed in interment camps. Additionally, there was a lot of propaganda against Japanese people which often dehumanized them in their depictions and perceived them as monsters. This was hypocritical because some Japanese Americans fought for the U.S. during the war and they did not go against the United States. (Lecture 12)

Analysis/Significance: This radicalization of the Japanese Americans was influenced by the war and the Executive Order that was passed. Japanese people were excluded and segregated from the rest of the population. This demonstrates the oppressive power leaders in the nation can possess against innocent minority groups without any consideration of the consequences of these orders. Especially after forcing them to leave their homes, this is a common occurrence in U.S. history. From forcibly taking Africans from Africa or forcing Indigenous populations to move for the benefit of the United States, Japanese Internment is no different. This is representative of white supremacy and the effects of power because the lives of many minority groups are not considered as long as it benefits the white population.

According to Dalfiume, there were may issues the African Americans faced with the United States fighting in World War II. Many African Americans were not given the opportunity to work different jobs and were mainly considered for janitor jobs. Additionally "Government financed training programs to overcome the shortages of skilled workers discriminated against Negro trainees"(Dalfiume).

Analysis/Significance: With the title relating to the "Forgotten Years" of African American movements towards more rights, the years during World War II are overshadowed by the international conflicts that arose during that time. This shows the lack of development opportunities for African Americans. They were segregated in terms of the roles they could get in the military. Furthermore, the governments decision to prevent back people from training programs is suggestive of the racial discrimination during that time.
Even now, history classes do not mention the effect that World War II had on black communities. Many of the needs of African Americans has been brushed over and never mentioned in modern day history textbooks or history classes. This lack of attention on this issues highlights the lack of attention to their issues at the home-front. Due to the war, the United States focused battles abroad rather than the injustices occurring within the nation. World War II was also a time where minorities fought for justice but it was overlooked then and is overlooked in modern times.

There were elements where people were denied the right to vote. For any African Americans their quality of life was impacted as well. For example, there were low rates of land ownership and they were subjected to sharecropping which took away more of their property in terms of crops. It was also very dangerous for people of color because they were denied basic constitutional rights such as not being able to carry firearms. They were also more susceptible to lynchings as well. (Lecture 8)

Analysis/Significance: In comparison with slavery, segregation was still denying African American human rights. They were still not treated equally and as a result they lived life in danger and at a disadvantage. These injustices subject black people into poverty and they are not given the same opportunities as white people. Similar to slavery, the work of African Americans is for the benefit of white people. With sharecropping, the landowner benefits the most by putting the sharecropper in more debt and forcing the sharecropper to give up more of their land.

The Civil War was a war between the North and South part of America which was because the nation was divided in ideas on slavery, economic interests, and who should be in power. The North had advantages in the industrialization of the region, railroads ad a bigger population. The South had advantages in having British Support, skilled and militant leaders, ad shorter supply lines. This war led to the creation of many weapons. The North ended up winning.

Reconstruction:
After the North won, the South needed to be reintegrated into the United States. This pushed the United States away from racism and allowed for a more multiracial democracy. There were more amendments created such as the 13th, 14th and 15th.

Analysis: This period provided a time for the United States to reform. While this war started because of divisions in beliefs, the government was able to reform during this time. It also brought awareness to the racist culture of the nation. While everyone's beliefs cannot be changed, this was the start of the conversation and gave African Americans more rights. It also lessened the racist aspects of the United State's legislation and government system. This did not entirely eradicate racism as there are still race related issue in the modern day. However, changes were made and created for the benefit of minorities ad provided some sense of equity and equality for minorities.
