Fresh Water Biome

This biome includes lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams. Lakes are the largest bodies of fresh water. Plants and algae are important because they provide oxygen. Algae is also food for many fresh water animals, like turtles and catfish. Some other animals in fresh water biomes need the moving water in a river to live. One important animal in America is the trout. They eat both fish and bugs. If Fresh water biomes didn't exist, most animals and plants would not be alive because they provide us with water for drinking.

The marine biome is the largest biome in the world. It includes the five main oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, Southern). Whales, dolphins, fish, crustaceans and other aquatic animals live there. Algae, or kelp, help the creatures breath. This biome helps provide rain for our crops and food from the oceans.

Have mostly grasses and scattered trees. They are created by humans burning grasslands and cutting down trees. Elephants can create a savanna by trampling tree seedlings, stripping off the bark and knocking trees over. They usually have warm temperatures ranging from 68 degrees to 86 degrees F. It usually rains 10-30 inches per year. During the dry seasons, lightning hits the ground, causing fires. The types of grasses they have are lemon grass, red oats grass, star grass, and Rhodes grass. Animals like horses, zebras, giraffes, and elephants are found in the savanna, mainly herbivores due to the abundance of grass.

An ecosystem forms because of the low amount of rainfall received each year. Less than 10 inches of rain per year is considered a desert. This causes very hostile living conditions for plants and animals. Deserts cover about 20% of the Earth's surface, all of which support plant and animal life. The 4 major types of deserts are Hot and Dry, Semiarid, Coastal and Cold.

The tundra is the coldest and driest place on earth, and home to many animals, including the polar bear and elk. There are lichen and moss in the tundra due to their adaptation to the cold. Very little rainfall(less than 10 inches a year), and always cold and dry. There are new roads and towns being built in the tundra, to support the increasing populations.

Taiga is also known as coniferous or boreal. Taiga is the worlds largest terrestrial biome. It is located in a broad band across North America, Europe, and Asia to the southern border of the Arctic Tundra. It is also found at cool, high elevation. The weather consists of long cold winters, and short mild wet summers. The taiga has less diverse plant life, and the animal populations are mainly seed eating squirrels and jays; small mammals; and larger browsing animals like moose, elk, and deer. There are few large cities in the Taiga, and most of it is un-populated.
