Brain (3 systems of learning)

It was really interesting to learn how my brain works, and what each part of the brain is used for, and how I process each piece of new information. This will help me in my own classroom as I will know to incorporate different strategies such has hands on learning, or kinesthetic, visual learning, and auditorial learning. Using all three of these together is the most efficient way to teach your students. I will now base every lesson on this newfound knowledge.

I really enjoyed getting to take a survey over how my brain functions best- what strategies I should use to learn best. I was amazed with my findings, as I was almost directly in the center of both left and right brain. I leaned just a tad more to the left, as I had 60 and 50 for right brain. Left brain people tend to be more analytical, the methodical thinkers, while right brained people tend to be more creative.

Child Advocacy Center

Getting to hear from the speaker during the two periods of class really helped me learn a lot about this center, as well as abuse in families and how to approach it. I never realized how many people a child would be forced to talk to if going through the regular system, but with the advocacy center, they are limited to 3 people. This would help the child feel much for comfortable in answering any questions and providing the same story each time. This center is a great tool to use when you think something is going wrong in your classroom. I would definitely go through the Child Advocacy center if I ever faced a problem in this area.

Stages of Development

This was extremely important from an education standpoint. We work on development in my early childhood classes, and it is extremely vital to know how a child's mind, body, and emotions develop with age. The more you know about a child's development, the more you will be able to connect with them, both on a educational and personal level.

Going back to the beginning of the year we talked about the different tiered systems. Microsystem- which is the closest system to the child, contains the family, childcare/school, peers, community, and media relationships. This is the first grouping system. The second system, the mesosystem, contains linkages and interrelationships between two or more of a developing persons microsystems. The third group, exosystems, is when the children are not active participants. This could be the parents jobs, city councils, school boards, or social services. The final group is the macrosystems. This is the belief systems, lifestyles, patterns/sets of instructions. These systems help to direct the child, and give a reason behind why the person is the way they are. This could help you get to know and understand your own students

This story was so amazing. I have never been so moved by a book before, and I would highly recommend this to any education teacher, or anyone I know for that matter. This gave such a powerful insight on the relationships between students and their teachers. How one teacher can make such an impact on the student, and completely turn them around for the better. Torey established such a strong bond with Sheila that she was able to completely flip around and become an entirely new student. She blossomed right in front of Torey's eyes. This book was heart wrenching as it told the story of an abused and neglected 6 year old girl. There were moments I couldn't stand to read, but the way Torey handled each and every situation that arose really moved me. She really took Sheila in and became the role model and support system that Sheila needed in her life.

Building relationships with your students is so important. If you establish a relationship from the very beginning, you will be able to connect and work with that student much easier. They will feel more comfortable with you, feeling they can approach you with any problems inside and outside of the classroom. They will be more willing to cooperate with you, and participate in any activities you have planned. Maintaining a healthy relationship with your students might just be the most important thing you can do as an education major.
