The conflict in this is how Alverez and her sister got so used to speaking English that they forgot their native language. They no longer understood the languages and the traditions that their family practiced.

This conflict shows that the kids at school with them made fun of them because they were different and weren't viewed as normal. The world seemed to become much larger to Alvarez once she learned to speak English. Before this, she and other girls like her only had a few career options.
