Diffusion of responsibility refers to a type of bystander effect where if a victim is hurt or in need of help in a public setting, an individual may not feel inclined to help as they believe someone else will step up to aid the person in need. The responsibility, being the duty to help said person, is passed on to other witnesses of the situation. This can be classified as a situational variable to helping. An example of this was predicted to be observed in accordance with the bystander effect of diffusion of responsibility in the kitty Genovese murder phenomenon.

Diffusion of responsibility is when people who need to make a decision wait for someone else to react first, this usually happens in large groups or gatherings. The more people involved its most likely that people will depend on others to make the decision or act first in that situation. Diffusion of responsibility also makes people feel less pressured because they belive someone else will take the responsibility, so people tend to not feel responsible for the current situation so they will feel less guilty if nothing is done to help. An inclusion of bystander effect could also be present because it states that people are less likely to help the victim if other people are present.

The term diffusion of responsibility is a concept that can arise in multitude of situations such as work, or simple everyday life experiences. It essentially means that when one individual is to make a decision, they wait for others to act and make that decision first or instead before they do. Because of this, as the number of individuals in a group increases, the longer an individual may wait before acting upon their decision is they believe there is a greater likelihood of another bystander doing something and so the responsibility that individual feels to help decreases which affects their tendency to help.
For example; a group project is to be done between you and your colleagues. They are not taking it seriously and so you may not feel as much pressure to do the work or take it seriously either.

Diffusion of responsibility occurs when we tend to act differently in a large group of people than we would when we are alone. When a large group of poeple is presented, an indiviudual feels less obliged to act upon or help and this is because we assume that in a public setting, it is clearly not our responsibility to act. It is also an easier way to diffuse guilt not just responsability. It is easier to share blame or pass it on entirely to those around us. If we feel that others are responsible, then the outcome of the situation is not just up to us, but them too. As the group increases, we feel less and less likely to help. This diffusion of responsibility developed from the bystander effect of 1964, when a woman named kitty Genovese was stabbed to death in her home, and despite the screams and cries for help heard by the neighbours, no one came to help or rescue. None of her neighbours took the initiative to call the police.

Diffusion of responsibility is the term used when a person/ group of people don't take responsibility for actions in a situation, eg:- don't offer help to a person in need, as they believe that it's not only their responsibility to help. If more people are present , the less likely a person will help a person in need. Eg: Kitty Genovese case showed diffusion of responsibility where bystanders ignored her after she was stabbed, as people thought that someone else would come along to help her, however she never received help and died of excessive blood loss.

It’s a reduction of personal responsibility experienced in groups/ social collectives. When the responsibility to help is spread amongst a number of people, therefore each feels a little less responsible than they would if alone. For example, Kitty Genovese case, where 38 witnesses saw her getting murdered but ignored her because the responsibility to help was diffused.

Diffusion of responsibility is defined as effect in which people are less likely to help when there are other bystanders around. The assumption that someone else will take action and responsibility is present.
