A bomb had been put on the plane in Frankfurt and the intention was that it would explode whilst the plane was over the Atlantic Ocean. However, the flight was delayed leaving London Heathrow- where it transited- and instead exploded over the town of Lockerbie in the Scottish Borders. All passengers and crew on-board were killed as well as 11 residents of the town. This incident resulted in a huge number of changes to airport security.
