This image from 1982 shows the remaining traces of Kamo'omaika'i fishpond in Hanalei. Overtime this fishpond has been forgotten. However, archeologist revealed remnants of the fishpond when developers wanted to build more facilities in the area.

In the 1930's, Hanalei Valley was known for rice production. The previous irrigation systems used to cultivate kalo were then used by immigrant farmers for the cultivation of rice.

Hanalei bay has a crescent shape, hence the meaning "crescent bay". The shoreline stretches about two miles. Hanalei bay provided and continues to provide residents with many resources. In addition, many traditional fishing practices were used to gather food from the bay.

The Hanalei bridge was first built in 1912 and has since been reinforced in past years. Prior to the construction of the Hanalei bridge, Hanalei and other ahupua'a past it were hard to access. Pictured is the Libby pinapple cannery from 1913. The cannery was the first large scale cannery, and was built right next to Kahouna fishpond (Kahalu'u fishpond) and ontop of Haluakaiamoana heiau.

This map shows the location of Kahonua fishpond, which is now known as Kahalu'u fishpond. This fishpond is located right next to Haluakaiamoana heiau and where the Libby pineapple cannery once stood.

Pinpointed is the location of Haluakaiamoana heiau in Kahalu'u. The Libby pineapple cannery was built directly ontop of this heiau and now nothing remains. Its believed that the cannery failed due to the desecration of this heiau.

Kapapa Island (Shoal Island) is located two miles off-shore of Kahalu'u. This island used to contain a fishing shrine and a heiau. In the 1950's scholars revealed a canoe house, tools, jewelry, and human remains on the island.

A more recent issue within Kahalu'u has been a $9million roundabout project. The location of this roundabout is near Kahalu'u fishpond where Kamehameha Hwy and Kahekili Hwy intersect. Many residents opposed this project and think the roundabout is not going to be beneficial.

The roundabout project is supposed to help in regards to safety and overall more efficient traffic at the intersection. Construction from the project has also caused a lot of traffic in the area.

In the past at Kahalu'u boat ramp park, signs have been posted warning people to stay out of the water due to wastewater bacteria. In 2015-2017, the water in Kahalu'u lagoon showed high levels of wastewater bacteria, ultimately due to the number of cesspools in the ahupua'a. This puts residents at risk for groundwater and drinking water contamination which could cause harm to both marine life and humans.

Kapapa is now a bird sanctuary preserve to protect the many seabirds that inhabit the island. This restricts access to the island as its closed from sunset to sunrise. In addition, it prohibits people from camping on the island as well as other activities.
