She was more understanding and she was more of a mother. She also learned that she was really happy with her son. This says that she is a lover, and was carer, who would provide for her son and love him as well.

Segregation affects the communities Marguerite visits, by who she sees when she goes, all black or all white for example. When Maya was young she had said that some people didn't even know what white people looked like. 

Bailey's character through the book was that he was maturing and growing farther from his mother. This changes in a completely opposite direction when she goes to San Francisco, where  there isn't much segregation and it is very diverse.  Maya is exposed to many different people and different races in San Francisco and this makes her more tolerant going forward.

Marguerites decision to keep her child is a sign of maturity, she could've gotten an abortion and that was her get out of jail free card and not have to deal with the responsibilities of having a child, she doesn't though and she has her child and it is great.
