Natural Disasters are complex events that require a great deal of coordination and preparation when they occur. It is the job of both national and international efforts in natural disaster preparation to not only lessen the damages caused but also save lives. Public/global health interventions such as on-the-ready international emergency aid, emergency shelter, and prepared first responders can go a long way in natural disaster relief. In terms of human-caused disasters, public awareness and education is essential in keeping the public away of their actions and possible consequences of carelessness such as throwing a cigarette away on dead grass.

This article describes the short and long-term needs of CA wildfire survivors. Specifically, it found that the top issues faced were housing and employment. In terms of health, it was mental and emotional support resources. This study and its findings not only relates to CA wildfires but can also be extended towards other disasters globally, in which we can learn to start extending the accessibility of such resources in future events.

Wildfire Pollution

Other than the mass amounts of property damage and deaths that wildfires can cause, there are also many long-term health effects associated with wildfires. One of them being the air pollution it causes. Wildfires spew out massive amounts of particulate matter which can blow across a state and affect people who live hundreds of miles from the fire itself. The exposure to too much PM can cause respiratory irritation, asthma attacks, and even worsened cardiovascular disease symptoms. This has led to an increased amount of hospital visits and health inequality.

This image showcases the devastating effects of the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake caused a subsequent tsunami and even a nuclear plant to explode. Although known to resist international aid, Japan allowed 8 different countries to send search-and-rescue teams, along with financial and material support from major organizations like the Red Cross.

This image showcases the explosion from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant that was concluded to be caused by the 2011 Earthquake. This explosion, and the mass amount of radioactive material released, would cause decades of harm to local populations. Putting this in a global health perspective, we can use this as an example of what types of interventions and prevention measures would be needed in terms of avoiding another disaster to occur.

Distrusts in Humanitarian Aid

It is common for both countries and people to not be eager in accepting humanitarian aid. This can be the cause of distrust among international aid organizations and/or local governments. In order for to achieve not only better global health but also just public health, trust is needed in order for public health inventions to work. If citizens dont trust their government in their interventions, then disasters and infection will continue to flourish. If countries dont trust each other for aid, then this can create a unneeded rivalry in terms of sharing of resources and research, while everyday citizens continue to suffer.
