I would like to do the student-led open house again this year. I had more positive comments about that curriculum night than any other since I have been teaching. It was really great to watch kids show their parents what we do all year. Theresa

I would like to do a teacher-led in my classroom. This is the only time I'm able to have all (hopefully) my parents in my room and go over my expectations, routines, answer questions, etc.

Last year, even though we scurried to get our Keynote presentations done, my fifth graders did an outstanding job presenting information on their iPads to their parents. It definitely was a buy-in for parents who were unsure about 1:1 technology in the classroom. I also had a parent come without his/her child, and the parent simply logged on to the child's iPad and viewed their presentation. I am hoping for a repeat performance this year!

While I really like the student-led format as a 4th grade parent last year, I am hoping to do a teacher-led night for myself his year. I am doing many things out of my comfort zone right now and would like to stick to a traditional keynote presentation.

Daphne

While I agree with the positive comments by Janis, I will say I had many parents who were in my room for only 10-15 minutes watching their students' keynote, but then left before the iPad mtg. I also believe the students just don't know enough after essentially one full week to relay to parents my expectations and philosophy. I really think curriculum night is the one night that I can present, as well as answer parent questions. I vote for traditional.

I love the idea of choosing what works best for us. I did student-led last near, but I had a lot of parents who let me know that they would have liked a more formal presentation. So, this year I'd like to do a teacher-led presentation and see what works best.
Amy

6:00 Heath
6:10 transition
6:15 Parent's priority classroom (20 min)
6:35 Transition
6:40 Second Classroom (15 minutes)
6:55 End and transition for iPad training.

I also think it would be a great idea to have a "warning bell" 2 minutes before transition time begins so we don't have to watch the clock -because we all know how well I do at that ;) - and if the bell rings and if there is anything we really have to hit that we haven't yet we know to do it without taking up transition time. Better yet, to ensure we provide time for parents to ask questions if we haven't gotten to that. The bell is not necessary, but it would be nice not to have to watch the clock.

Another idea would be to start the curriculum night at 5:50 because that wouldn't add to teacher time. If you did your thing before 6, that would still keep us at 6-7 and increase time with the parents and teachers.
