Imagine if students could join in a discussion group via padlet... they could input their ideas, they could join forces, comment and like the opinions and thoughts of others. This type of media could include students who otherwise do not join into class discussions. The access to online data is at their fingertips, with teachers being able to upload information as needed. Students can also receive feedback on the value that their online discoveries have added to the discussion. Powerful things can happen via this application.

What is effective collaboration?

A strategy that I would use with my students would be uploading videos... then asking open ended questions that would help them see the value each person adds to a group/team. Here is an example:

What the youtube link below. Then, as a table, discuss the following:

1. What problem was the group/team trying to solve?
2. What variables needed to be taken into consideration when attempting to solve the problem?
3. Who appeared to be a leader in the group? What social skills did that person exhibit? What did that person do or not do that made them an effective leader (if they were effective)?
4. Who, in the group, appeared to provide little help/aide in solving the problem? What social skills did that person exhibit? What did that person do or not do that made them an effective member of the group (if they were effective)?
5. What good team behaviors did you observe? What would you change if you were on this team?

Students must learn what is valuable information and what is fluff information that is not intended for anything more than entertainment. Through a series of blogs, class discussions and video segments, students will learn how to evaluate the data they have been given in order to determine its value in aiding with solving a problem. In theater, students are often exposed to criticism regarding performances. I would help students to see the value in this by having them read through varying online sources to determine which are done via professional theater critics, and which are novices who are simply stating opinions. Critics have other productions to make comparisons to, other thespians, and other performances to draw conclusions from. Having students read and recognize the difference, and then write their own critiques of performances based on previous knowledge, and on watching multiple performances, then making comparisons can help my students to build confidence, as well as learn which types of media are valued and which are not in the case of theater.
