It consists of two parts the brain and the spinal cord.

They are 4 main functions of the nervous system

1. receiving general sensory information such as touch, temperature and pain

2. Receiving and interpreting  special sensations such as taste, smell, vision and sounds

3. The process of sensory information from different parts of the body.

4.  response of the body after receiving the sensations or stimuli.

The somatic nervous system consists of the spinal nerves which control the body's skeletal muscles. It involves sensory and motor pathways. 

The somatic nervous system is responsible for controlling certain involuntary reflex action, but mostly controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles.
