There are an abundance of overlapping concepts in most high school content areas.
       Examples:
Math--The ability to solve equations
English--The ability to look at/read a passage and cite evidence, find the plot, solution, moral etc..
History--The abilty to look at a timeline of events or a chart and use the key to make sense of the information
_______________________________
In the science world, and particularly in my school, there are very few overlapping concepts. We have one teacher teaching physics, another teaching Chemistry, and myself teaching Biology. 2 concepts that overlap include graphing and identifying variables--but on a large scale, this is only a few questions on the End of Course Exam and doesn't necessarily have a large payout.

When we were looking at this issue, we quickly realized that we couldn't simply take some of my content and incorporate it into their curriculum. It just doesn't fit. We pondered sharing standards--is this possible? Chemistry can cover Bio-Chem topics so I can skip it, but essetially, that's it. So that left us looking at our Intervention Time/Advisory or whatever you call it. We have roughly 25 minutes of Intervention Time for students to do missing assignments, study, work on school work, read etc..

If we want to make Our Intervention Time more meaningful towards the EOC for Biology, we are going to have to pick kids with a purpose and intent to cover topics that are ESSENTIAL.

We have something called DRAFT. Our school creates a list of students and places them into 3 categories. 1)GOLD--These students have above 95% cummulative hourly attendance and all A's and B's with no office referrals (During a specific time frame ex-from Midterm to end of quarter)
2)SILVER--These students have have above 90% attendance, no office referrals, and all A,B, or C's.
3) BRONZE- D or F's, below 90% attendance, or any office referrals.
Gold students go to a location of their choice from a list of options Monday-Thursday and do whatever they'd like (play games, read, on phone etc.) Friday's are normal advisories.
Silver students get 2 days of free time, and the other two days are spent in DRAFT time.
All Bronze Students are in DRAFT time. This group of students are listed and are picked to be in certain classrooms by the teachers and must remain in those rooms until the next drafting time frame.

Looking at this process from a larger scopr, it could potentially look like a good idea, but what it ends up looking like is a large babysitting session. We decided to do something meaninful during this time that could potentially help boost EOC scores in Biology.

The Plan

Our science department is 3 teachers 1)Freshmen Physics 2)Sophomore Chemistry 3) Junior Biology
Our Plan..we will each Draft 15 students. I will focus on students that need to focus on essential concepts that they either aren't getting in the classroom or are make or break EOC concepts. Chemistry will also choose students that need to work on a particular concept (that information provided by myself). The 3rd Physics teacher will draft normally. The first 2 classrooms will then take 10 kids each, shifting our extras to the 3rd class. The 3rd class becomes a generic study hall--missing assignments, 0's, catch upw ork, studying, etc. The other 2 classes will be providing meaningful instuction to those 10 kids over the concepts theya ren't getting. It will be raw, real and questions will hopefully be answered.

Disclaimer** These classes are not fixed. They can easily rotate, our physics teacher just prefers not to because her knowledge in Biology is weaker than the Chemistry teachers. This may only work because my team is willing. If they aren't committed or willing--this would be a bust.

This is also on a trial basis. After the first time trying it, if it doesn't work--we go back to our normal routine.

I will begin this process after Mid-term grades have come out. I will make a list of 20 kids of Juniors who either need extra teaching time or are on the cuff between below basic and basic (this is the greatest point jump for overall DATA).
Our Draft lasts an estimate of 4 weeks which is essentially 16 days of intervention (normal Friday's). Whatever unit we are in will be the focus of intervention--Genetics, Evolution..etc.

Our EOC is the End of April. During the month of April, we make one slight change to the plan. We still each draft 15 kids, but now it's all Juniors for all 3 classes--no shifting around needed. We strictly teach them test taking strategies, practice tests, highlight EOC concepts, show them bonus videos, kahoots or any enrichment needed in order to hopefully succeed on taking the EOC!
