The material in the room actually talk to us.(pacini Ketchabaw et al., 2016)

This unit is all about Materials that we use in early childhood education-eg paper, clay, paint, charcoal, light etc.

In Session 1, We discussed all about Paper. We critically reflect our knowledge about Paper.
Before this unit paper was just a paper for me which I was using for years and years without realising its value. I never ever think that paper actually interact with spaces, it is capable, It communicates etc, even though I am using it since childhood.
But without realising all this about paper I am a big fan of paper since i was a child. Even in this world of Technology I prefer hard copies of everything.

During session1 and session2 I learnt about materials inquiry about paper as I participated in critical conversation about paper in breakout rooms. I discussed with other participants and I wondered how paper take the lead of artwork. How paper becomes political as a form of newspaper and as a form of map.
After watching "John Wolseley's documentary I Wondered how a paper becomes a very powerful message in a form of painting through creativity.

After the reading " Encounters with Materials in early Childhood Education, I learnt the deep meaning of word experimentation. I realised how materials, objects and environments are connected to experimentation, thus experimentation is a key to inquiries and learning.(pacini Ketchabaw et al., 2016)

It helped me to shift my thinking to look at materials differently. Instead of giving children instruction how tpo use material, I realised how important to give them opportunities to do their own experiments-if they want to use two different materials by combining it together as an educator I should let them take the lead and do their own inquiries that will totally based on their own experiments, their own inquiries.(pacini Ketchabaw et al., 2016)

I made few changes in the art studio and put everything easily approachable to them so they can do their own experiments without waiting for adults to provide materials to them which will definitely lead to develop many of new inquiries, when they use their hundred languages, hundred hands, hundred way of thinking without any interruption.(Hundred languages poem - static1.squarespace.com)

After Session one I reflect on my relationship with paper which took me to my childhood, i realised that same as everyone else my relationship with paper started from a very young age. When I first saw it as a form of note books and books. I used to love to draw on it and love to see pictures on the books. Which helped me to learn my language and improved my communication.
When i learnt reading and writing, paper became my best friend. I started writing my thoughts, emotions and memories on a paper as a form of my diary/journals, reading story books was my favourite hobby as a child.
On that time the main way of communication was letters as technology was not developed much in the form of mobile phones or landline phones. It was a golden era for paper. It was everyone's favourite as a mean of letters, post cards, Wedding cards, newspapers etc.
Other forms of paper that was my favourite a a child were paper as a kite, Paper as a form of boat on rainy days, Paper as a handmade fan in hot days( in India they cut electricity for few hours in a day during summer time to save it for agriculture purposes),Paper as a boat on rainy days, Paper as an handmade Aeroplane when sitting in an aeroplane was a dream for me.
After reflecting on my own journey with paper and as an early childhood educator I strongly believe that paper's role in child's learning is vital and we cant even imagine our art studio without paper.

I love art and craft. Painting and drawing is one of my favourite hobbies. I am in early childhood for more than 5 years now.

My relationship with paint started from my childhood. we used to do painting with water based paint colours. drawing pictures of natural scenes, trees, mountains, sun and ponds or some flowers, apple or elephants that was the most subjects of my painting. It is sad but as a child I just draw and paint whatever I was told to draw or paint. In that traditional teaching era there was no space of my hundred language as a child, My teacher shut it down. she was the one who always used to decide what we are going to do in art class.

after becoming an educator, my way of learning about art shadowed me and also effected my way of teaching. From last five your of teaching I used paint with children for many many times. But it was most of the time was interrupted by me- use less or more paint, be careful you will rip your paint, don't mix the paint eg.

but after learning the vital role of materials in children's development and learning and the power of materials it impacted my teaching philosophy and shifted it to inquiry based experimental learning.

After the reading "language of Art" I wondered how children the language of art speak to and about the imaginative and rational word.(Pelo,2006, page 2)

Children convey new ideas, Their past experiences, memories that leads to cognitive development and express their feelings and emotions.(Pelo,2006, page 2)

When they get opportunity to talk about their art work, they always come up with many stories, they show us what we cant see with our adult eye and when they got this opportunity they become producer rather than consumer. They straight away take the lead and a sense of proud and satisfaction of the work they accomplished.
