When Clarisse asked Montag if he was happy, he realized that he was not. His happiness was all fake. This is like our society because we are so busy with all the entertainment and advanced technology that is in our life that we can not see we are unhappy. We are constantly staring at our screens that we do not take time out of our lives to do something that we will genuinely make us happy. The quotes also show that technology is a major distraction. In Fahrenheit 451, Mildred is so distracted with the parlor that whenever Montag asks her to do something, it just goes out the other ear. She is not paying attention to him because she is focused on her 'family.' When he is talking about something important, she is only worried about her TV show.
