Minnesota Children's Museum by Nikole Logan

Consider how MCM services their community. How does the office have human, social, physical, financial, environmental, political, cultural, food/energy/community capital, and a fair/head/healthy/safe/moral start?

I really appreciate the fact that the museum is trying to reach out to the community with positive interactions for families. It was impressive with the amount of partners that have supported the construction and re-inventions of the space. I was also very content to see their commitment to developmental appropriate and to have a focus on what kind of experience families and children get.

MCM is really trying hard to reach out to the community and bridge the gaps to accessibility, connection and meaningful opportunities. Their underlying and unifying philosophy is shown in their Powers of Play elements and how these elements are experienced in everyday life. I would like to connect these Powers of Play to some of the parent contend shared during my parent events at the schools.
The hands on activities on plant growth, food sourcing and marketing helps children and families connect to their real world.

I think the museum did a great job of setting the space up for children to explore on their own and also make their learning their own. The infant / toddler space is definitely a step up from the old space. The MCM included a lot more modes of learning in this space.
The Works is an exciting space for children and their families to be exposed to tasks that they may not have the opportunity to do at home (sewing and paper circuitry). This also might help the children to be able to adapt for jobs that haven't even been invented yet. It also gives them the opportunity to BE the inventor. In the Our World, Car Wash and new Roof Top exhibit it is very evident that the MCM wants the children to feel like this is "their" space in "their" city. There is evidence of actual police, and fire trucks from Saint Paul in the space. The new Kitchen area will highlight and rotate different cultural foods. This time it was suggested to be a Taco Stand. This space also encourages children and families to be risk takers in a safe environment. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this space!
Aim

There is so much thought that is put into the reconstruction of the museum. It is not just a place for families to have fun, but it is a place for children to explore and be creative in a developmentally appropriate way. The new set up is really set up for children of all ages.
The museum is doing as much as they can to ensure that everyone can have access to it.

So I am a more than frequent visitor at the MCM. I have seen all phases of the museum from its location in Bandana Square, to the current space, to this renovation. Very exciting to see the transformation and expansion. I certainly think there are some things I will miss about the old museum, yet there are new ways they have become inclusive. Including exhibits for older elementary was a great idea. This was missing before.
The museum certainly has new human resources that contribute to fair and head start. The new positions devoted to families, outreach, etc. are informed about the developmental stages and the impacts experiences can have on developmental strides.
I think there are still some areas that need diversity in perspectives for families, and it is clear that this is not targeted.
I look forward to going again, soon!

Unleash the Power of Play!

I followed the evolution of the Children's Museum since its start at Bandana Square. I have been there with my own family several times and taken many other families and children on field trips or special events. I appreciate the presentation by the staff explaining the background information behind the development of each area, showing a clear goal and purpose to build exciting, fun, creative, engaging and developmentally appropriate spaces where children and families can play and learn. I will continue to promote the Museum by encouraging families to attend the Target Free 3rd Sundays and access free tickets with a Library card. I like their initiative to develop educational outreach materials emphasizing the Power of Play and the Beacons of Success. I am wondering if they have materials translated and hire staff that represents different cultural and language backgrounds.
MD
