They were also people who thought that something needed to be done to save Germany from communists, socialists, and other "traitors" who caused a defeat of the German army. The Nazis were convinced that they had to rid the world of Jews, who they primarily blamed for Germany's loss in World War I. The  word "Nazi" is slang for the political party called the Nationalist Social German Workers' Party.  (NSDAP).  Adolf Hitler designed the Nazi flag, with the swastika that has become infamous within the last century. The swastika was a symbol used in many different cultures for 5,000 years before becoming the symbol of the Nazi party. The Nazi swastika is a hooked cross, and on the flag the swastika is black on a circle or white, and the rest of the flag is red. Hitler was the leader of the leader of the Nazis when he became chancellor. Anti-Semitism and persecution started as far back as the death of Christ. Jews and Christians had differing beliefs on Jesus being the messiah, and some Christians accused Jews of helping kill Jesus. During the Crusades, starting in 1096, Christians would be determined to kill any Jews that they found. Over the centuries, Jews were expelled from England from 1290 to 1655, and Spain expelled them in 1492. Martin Luther, the founder of Protestantism, was very anti-Jew and ranted against them in On Jews and their Lies (1543). Jews were also money-lenders, which were necessary but banned in Christianity, giving the Christians a way to borrow money and another reason to hate Jews. In the beginning of World War II, the Jews were ridiculed for their beliefs. Then, their rights were taken away and they were sent to ghettos. And finally, they were moved to concentration camps where they were killed. Jews weren't the only victims of the Nazis. There were at least five million other civilians who were also victims. The Jews were accused of backstabbing and profiting illegally from the war on both sides in Russia and Germany, even though investigations show that many Jews contributed to the war and were killed just as much as the rest of the populations. This blame was strengthened by  years of anti-Semitism from political propaganda and religious beliefs, such as Christians believing that Jews killed Christ. Hitler participated in World War 1 and eventually became the leader of Nazi Party. Hilter was angry over the Treaty of Versailles in 1918, which blamed Germany for staring the war. That motivated him to run for office in 1932, where he criticized the Treaty during his campaign.
