It's interesting how art seems to be intimately connected with the idea of self-expression - how even a urinal can be art. There doesn't seem to be a fine line as to what is or what isn't considered art. This seems like it is in contrast to other AOK's where we can actually make a fine distinction between what falls under there and what doesn't.

Last class we talked about the nature of art: What is art and what isn't it, how can we define it. We concluded that art can be defined as a number of things. For example, it can be any product of human imagination/ingenuity, any replica of nature, or anything that the 'art world' decided art is.

In the previous class, we began with the new AOK in our TOK syllabus which is the arts. We discussed the different types of art which include visual arts, performing arts, literature, graphic arts.

We discussed in depth about the different types of art as well as if all of these are actually considered to be art forms.

We analysed pieces of art and discussed whether they are universally recognised as art and saw that each one of us had different opinions. We also talked about our own individual perception of art.

We came to a conclusion that each person has a different perception as to what is art to them and what is not. For example, we saw a picture of a law mower, we discussed how for some people this may be art because there is an object which has a purpose. However, to many people it was not art because it would not signify beauty. We understood that art is about perception.

Last class was an introduction to the AOK of Arts. The discussion that my classmates and I had was very fruitful and exciting! Compared to other AOKs I have to say that even defining the word "Art" was extremely tough. Every time one of us had come to a definition of the word someone else had a perspective or argument to change that view. It was frustrating but very exciting experience to go through ! We had a very interesting discussion defining our views, our judgements, and our perspectives.

Last class, we explored the AOK - Arts. A lot of the time we consider objects that are beautiful and visually appealing to be art, but as we progressed we saw that art can be defined as something that has a meaning behind it or a personal connection, and a lot of what we consider as art is based on perception. For example, we saw a controversial piece of artwork that many didn't consider to be art, while others did. Hence it can be said that what we consider as art is based on our perspective and our outlook.

Each person had a different perspective on what constitutes art, and various art forms, so it was interesting to see each person's views and opinions. I personally came to the conclusion that art is subjective and rather hard to define, as there are a plethora of things that can be termed as art.

We had a discussion about what each person in the class would consider art and it was very interesting to see how a few people considered a variety of objects (as displayed by pictures) as art and some considered only the classical art forms such as paintings, dance, and music as art.
