Week 1: Taaruf and Adab

Taaruf means "getting to know one another" or "introduction." In the context of marriage, taaruf is a process where individuals or families meet to understand each other's background, values, and intentions in a respectful and organized manner. In taaruf, there are certain boundaries, such as avoiding excessive physical interaction, and the focus is on values, faith, and life goals rather than superficial aspects like appearance or material status. It is a formal way of introducing oneself, usually involving families, to ensure both parties make thoughtful and informed decisions.

Adab refers to etiquette, manners, and proper conduct. It covers many areas of life that emphasize Islamic principles such as respect, kindness, and moral integrity. Adab applies to various situations, such as interacting with others politely, speaking gently, respecting personal space, and maintaining proper behavior in worship and religious duties. It also includes being generous when hosting guests and showing respect to elders. In Islam, adab is highly emphasized, with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saying that "the best of you are those who have the best manners and character."

In summary, taaruf is about formal introductions and mutual understanding, especially in marriage, while adab is about how to behave and interact with others in a respectful and proper manner. Both concepts stress the importance of respect, modesty, and integrity in everyday life.

Week 2: Hadith Jibril

The Hadith of Jibril is a famous narration from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), where the angel Jibril (Gabriel) appears in human form to ask the Prophet a series of questions about Islam. The purpose of this was to teach the companions about the fundamental aspects of the religion.

Jibril first asked the Prophet about Islam, and the Prophet explained that it involves five basic pillars: the declaration of faith (shahada), prayer (salah), fasting during the month of Ramadan (sawm), giving charity (zakat), and performing the pilgrimage (hajj) if able.

Then, Jibril asked about Iman (faith), and the Prophet explained the six pillars of belief: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Day of Judgment, and Qadar (divine destiny).

Finally, Jibril asked about Ihsan (excellence), where the Prophet defined it as worshipping Allah as if one sees Him, and if one cannot see Him, knowing that He sees them. This represents the highest level of spiritual consciousness in Islam.

The hadith concludes with Jibril’s departure, and the Prophet explains that this visit was a lesson for the people on the essential aspects of their faith, with Jibril being a direct source of divine guidance for the companions.

Week 3 and 4: Pillars of Iman

The pillars of Iman are the six key beliefs that every Muslim holds to form the foundation of their faith. First, there's the belief in Allah, meaning that there is no god but Him. He is the only Creator and sustainer of everything in existence, and nothing compares to Him. Then, Muslims believe in angels, who are created from light and serve Allah in various ways, such as delivering messages and protecting individuals. The belief in the books of Allah follows, which includes all the scriptures He revealed to His prophets, like the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Qur'an, with the Qur'an being the final and most complete guidance. The next belief is in the prophets, with the understanding that Allah sent these chosen individuals to guide humanity with His message, starting from Adam to the final prophet, Muhammad (PBUH). There’s also the belief in the Day of Judgment, when every person will be resurrected and held accountable for their actions, with the righteous rewarded and the wrongdoers punished. Lastly, there's the belief in Qadar, or divine predestination, meaning that Allah has knowledge and control over everything that happens in the world, but humans still have free will to make choices. These beliefs shape how Muslims view the world, their purpose, and their relationship with Allah.

Week 5: Ihsan and Eschatology

Ihsan in Islam refers to the concept of excellence in worship and living a life of high moral and spiritual standard. It’s the highest level of faith. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explained it as worshipping Allah as if you see Him, and if you can’t see Him, knowing that He sees you. Essentially, it’s about striving for the best in everything you do, from worship to your interactions with others, living with sincere intention and awareness of Allah’s presence. It’s the spiritual excellence that goes beyond just performing religious obligations; it’s about being mindful of your actions and striving to embody the best qualities in your behavior.

Eschatology in Islam is the study of the end times, the afterlife, and everything that happens after death. This includes beliefs about the Day of Judgment, the resurrection of the dead, the final reckoning, and the ultimate destinations of paradise or hell. Muslims believe that on the Day of Judgment, everyone will be resurrected, their deeds will be weighed, and they will be rewarded or punished based on their faith and actions in life. Eschatology also involves beliefs about events leading up to the end of the world, such as the coming of the Mahdi, the return of Jesus (Isa), and the final defeat of evil. The teachings on eschatology emphasize the temporary nature of this world and the eternal nature of the afterlife, reminding Muslims to live righteous lives in preparation for what is to come.

Week 6: Adab as student

Adab as a student in Islam refers to the proper manners and conduct that a student should embody in their pursuit of knowledge. It's about not just gaining knowledge, but also cultivating respect, humility, and dedication. A student’s attitude towards learning, teachers, and others plays a big role in how they grow, both intellectually and spiritually.

A key aspect of adab as a student is showing respect to your teachers, being attentive, and valuing their wisdom. It’s also about maintaining sincerity in your studies, seeking knowledge for the sake of Allah and not for personal gain or fame. A student should approach learning with humility, acknowledging that no matter how much they know, there’s always more to learn. Patience is also an important quality, as students are encouraged to work hard and persevere, even when faced with challenges or difficulties in their studies.

Additionally, a student should treat others with kindness and respect, particularly fellow students, and avoid being boastful or arrogant. The attitude of a student should reflect a commitment to excellence, not only in acquiring knowledge but in implementing that knowledge in everyday life in a way that benefits both themselves and society. Islam emphasizes that the process of seeking knowledge is as valuable as the knowledge itself, and proper conduct throughout this journey is vital.

Week 7: Nature Environment and Sustainable in Islam

In Islam, nature and the environment are considered a vital part of Allah’s creation, and Muslims are encouraged to view the world around them as a trust (Amanah) that should be cared for and preserved. The natural world is seen as a sign of Allah’s greatness and power, and humans are viewed as stewards of the Earth, responsible for maintaining the balance that Allah has set.

Islam teaches that everything in nature has a purpose and is interconnected. The Qur'an often references nature — such as the earth, the mountains, the rivers, the trees, and animals — to remind people of the Creator’s design and the importance of not exploiting or destroying the environment. Allah commands that we reflect on the natural world, as it is a reflection of His beauty and power. This awareness of the environment is meant to encourage gratitude and mindfulness of the responsibility humans have.

Sustainability in Islam is about preserving the Earth’s resources and ensuring that they are used in a way that benefits future generations. The Qur'an and Hadith emphasize moderation and discourage wastefulness. For instance, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah instructs believers to take care of their environment, saying: "Indeed, He does not like the wasteful." Muslims are encouraged to practice sustainability in various aspects of life, such as conserving water, avoiding overconsumption, planting trees, and taking care of animals.
