After Iago's failed attempt at making Desdemona's father ruin Othello and Desdemona's marriage because the Duke convinced Iago that Othello was a good man, Roderigo is unsure of what do do and says that he's so in love with Desdemona. He asks Iago about what to do and Iago tells him.
IAGO:
"Virtue? A fig! 'Tis in ourselves that we are thus or thus. Our bodies are our gardens, to the which our wills are gardeners. So that if we will plant nettles or sow lettuce, set hyssop and weed up thyme, supply it with one gender of herbs or distract it with many, either to have it sterile with idleness or manured with industry, why the power and corrigible authority of this lies in our wills" (I.iii.315-322).

What does this mean?
This is the start of Iago's games of revenge and manipulation against Othello. He basically compares people's body's with gardens and that their wills are gardeners. This is where Iago's Inspiration comes from. He continuously plants seeds of doubts on separate occasions in Othello's mind, thus leading to the tragic outcome of the play.

Iago manipulates the other characters in Othello by focusing on and triggering their personal doubts and insecurities. Iago is also clearly a sociopath, he sees everything in terms of advantage to him, including people. Iago is also misogynistic and racist, often referring to Othello as a black ram. Iago's main aim is to portray Othello in a negative way or in all, to get rid of Othello. Iago is a master of innuendo and deceit, and he uses those skills to take advantage of other characters' weaknesses.

An example of this is shown when he says “put thy money in thy purse” when he wants to claim money from Roderigo for promising him that he will get his one true love.

Iago uses pathos with Cassio, he employs emotions to provoke the response he wants and he plays Cassio’s emotions. After Cassio is embarrassed and fired for his drunk act and outburst, Iago recognizes that he’s emotionally not okay and attempts to get some information out of him as an ally and friends. Iago desperately asks, “What, are you hurt, lieutenant” (II.iii.223).

Iago uses logos to convince Othello. This method of persuasion uses logic and reason. Iago repeats Othello’s own words, making Othello say, “By heaven, thou echo’ st me” (III.iii.112). Iago recognizes the fact that Othello is a logical individual, and he understands that he has to use simple logos to provide Othello with the ideas to make his own assumptions.

Iago is a brilliant character because he gets so close to the people he manipulates without the fear of getting caught. His persona portrays the quote, "Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer" -Mario Puzo. He gains their trust appearing as a good person that only wants to help other people, however, each time his victim begins to feel like they're close, he's secretly only becoming closer to achieving his goal of manipulation. People in the real world use this all the time, especially in high school, for a higher status.

He could've gotten away with an extreme amount of manipulation and destruction, but in the end...justice was served. Shakespeare is trying to convey that it is not okay to be a victim of manipulation. Tragic outcomes are caused by the manipulation of one person, that’s how easy it is to control an entire group of people. One should not be a victim and convinced by someone else's desires. They must stand up for themselves, think for themselves and educate themselves on the truth.

In Orwell's dystopian society, everyone is controlled by the Party. The party manipulates and controls all the information so that society doesnt' question anything and does what they say, based on their beliefs and values. In 1984, Winston explains,"'Who controls the past', ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past'" (Orwell 37). The Party has the power to change anything they want from the past and essentially manipulate the reality of the citizens of Oceania. They convince people that they are always right and it’s the truth. This relates to Iago in Othello because ago has complete control over what the characters know about the situation. Whatever he wants them to know he will say and perfectly manipulate them with his words and persuasive techniques.
How destructive manipulation is and how the theme of manipulation in Othello compares to Orwell's 1984 (below in the Prezi).

In William Shakespeare’s Othello, almost every single character is manipulated once throughout the play. The manipulator and antagonist of the story are Iago, who is considered to be very trustworthy, dependable and an overall good friend, but in reality, he has hidden goals to get his revenge and ruin the lives of the people who interact with Othello. Iago's first victim was Roderigo, who was obsessed with his love for Desdemona and inquired advice from Iago. Iago promised Roderigo that he could help him get with Desdemona and gives him false hope by promising this. He tells Roderigo that he could win Desdemona by judging Othello and says, "The food that to him [Othello] now is as luscious as locusts, shall be to him shortly as adverb as the coloquintida. She must change for youth; when she is sated with his body, she will find the error of her choice. She must have change, she must; therefore put money in thy purse." (Act 1, Scene 3). Iago not only convinces Roderigo that he will get Desdemona, but he also convinces him to pay him for this to happen. He then goes onto manipulate other characters in the play to unknowingly take part in his master plan, so that he doesn’t have to do all of the “dirty work”. All of these circumstances and events play key roles, as they lead right to the climax which is the tragedy of the play. Roderigo is the first of his many victims, which include Othello, Cassio, and Emilia. His deceptive and manipulating ways lead to the death of not only those he manipulated but to the sanity of who he has affected.

He tells Othello that his wife, Desdemona, is having an affair with Cassio (his first in command). For example, when Cassio and Desdemona were just having a friendly conversation, Iago twisted their words and the intentions of their conversations. He made Othello think that there was something going on between Cassio and Desdemona and that she was having an affair. He used tricks on Othello to get Othello's mind going and to question himself. When he talked to Othello about Desdemona and Cassio and left Othello wondering what’s happening, Iago responded with "Think my lord?" (III.iii.106). This made Othello very suspicious and he yearned for concrete answers, so much so that he believed Iago and everything because he was desperate, this caused a deceitful environment. Manipulation can get you almost anything you want
