Why do you think there is no female character in the book?

Yim: the influence from the war at the time, most of the soldiers were male (Navy); maybe female can't show the "smartness" or "civilization" or "savagery" as much

Film: the effects from patriarchy, male are "stronger" physically than female at the time, also the boys are more naughty than girls, so it's more prominant in contrast
