He was the first son of John Kelly, who was an ex convict from Ireland who was wedded to Ellen Kelly. Her family, the Quinns also came from Ireland and grew up as poor assisted migrants. Ned grew up in north-eastern Victoria when there was heavy conflict between selectors and squatters. The selectors viewed the corrupt police as the squatters allies. In 1865, John Kelly was jailed for possession of a stolen cow hide. He then passed away in 1866 and so the family moved to a small selection near Greta, where they lived in poverty. In 1869 and 1870 Ned Kelly faced three charges of robbery but through lack of evidence, he was dismissed. Although in late 1870, at the young age of 15, he received six months hard labour for assault and three years for horse robbery. Only three years after his release, Ned joined his father in the trade of horse and cattle stealing. On the 5th of April 1878, Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick. He arrested Dan but Ellen Kelly assaulted with shovel and Ned fired at him. During his time there was a lot of oppression happening and he was standing up against it. Ned Kelly was also standing up against the crooked cops that were against what police meant.
