the opposition between external and internal being could be seen though the word choices in the poem. e.g. first stanza，some people “are” pigs；and “look like” pigs.
The same idea is repeated in last stanza when “essence” is mentioned.

The poem is written from Circe's perspective, as seen through the personal pronoun 'I'. She is justifying her actions of turning men into pigs by stating that their behaviour is like those of pigs. Through the word choice, the tone seems audacious. Eg: "If I wanted only to hold you, I could hold you prisoner." She is also speaking of her independence. It goes against the idea that women are weak and need men for strength and survival. Eg: "Under the care of me and my ladies". She becomes detached from emotion considering she was raped by the ship's captain, which is something she blames the patriarchy for encouraging behaviour. Eg: "I'm sick of your world that lets the outside disguise the inside".

1. Metonomy: sorceress refers to the awaken women who are pragmatist, rational and steadfast, rather than irrational and uncontrolled.
2. Prisoner: Women in this context have the power as men in reality, but they don't abuse their power and oppress men as men did before.

in the first stanza, the narrator (circle) reveals the essence of men that ignore her feelings and love her appearance without caring about her feelings. So she just externalize their nasty hearts. And the word "never" is used to emphasize their filthy minds.
