On the other hand, a minimal amount of homework supports skills learned in class, allows parents to see what is being learned in class and whether or not their child understands it, and begins to teach children time management.

Interest-driven instruction is where we need to head as an educational system. Students will be more invested and show greater understanding of content if they are given say in what they learn. Grades on tests don't necessarily predict how a child will function in life. Our focus should be on providing equity and equality to all students.

Education and learning should have room for student choice. If students have more of a say in their education and are learning about what's valuable to them, they'll be more engaged, put in more effort, and get more personal growth from their experience. I believe students start disliking school because they're told what a meaningful education looks like. This perspective ignores the unique talents of each child and quashes creativity. Education should be about celebrating those that think outside the box.

Education and learning means it's time to stop requiring so many weekly activities that must be documented...AR/Achieve/Go Math!/etc. If you're a parent, assign as much weekly HW that you're willing to have your child do, taking into consideration the value of after school activities. If you're not a parent yet, how much HW would you like your child to have? On the flip side, we also need to remember that these kids will go into middle school and high school with an overwhelming amount of expected HW. How do we balance?
