Is the no treats negotiable? Instead of nothing, why can’t we limit it to mini cupcakes? Many students feel special by bringing in a treat and it’s fun to celebrate the students. This feels like another way we are taking away fun from the students.

In the past we had special treats saved for those on a special diet. They always felt included and were very happy! I feel we are taking the joy out of being a student. We have a lot of parents who can't afford a party and so they want to celebrate with a simple cookie at times. I would love for the control to be given back to what works best for each classroom. I know we can handle the special diets ourselves.

I respect that there are children and adults as well that have specific allergies that can and do effect their everyday life. However, we are so busy including those few that in doing so we are excluding the many. I feel that each class can handle the needs of the children assuming that the parent has taken the responsibility of informing the teacher of any dietary needs of their child.

Our children feel such pride and joy when we acknowledge their birthday with a special treat. Think back to your own childhood experiences celebrating your special day with your school family. For many of our kids this is the only birthday celebration they have that involves people other than their family. How often can we provide such a meaningful celebration of each child that showcases them as the “leader of the moment” that doesn’t focus on academics, athleticism, or popularity? I agree only a small treat like a mini cupcake or a cookie is sufficient, but a “non-edible item that supports the learning process”…sounds to me like we are trying to suck the joy out of acknowledging this happy occasion.

In today's world, the children are growing up so fast that most of them miss out on the fun times of being a child. For some of the children in our school, this is the only opportunity to celebrate with their friends. Many of our families can't afford a party, so a small treat...cupcakes or cookies shared with friends (classmates) is a very BIG, Important, Happy, Fun Celebration for these children. The sad part is, if this goes through...we will not be able to have other classroom celebrations throughout the year..."Winter Celebration", "Valentines or Friendship Celebrations, etc. Will this also include after school events such as the Daddy-Daughter Dance? I think individual teachers know and understand their students and families and should be able to control what works best in their classroom.
