Amish Homes

Amish homes always reflect the importance of the family. The houses are usually big, but they are also plain and simple as can be. Many farmhouses have doubled or triple dwelling units to house the grandparents. As many farmers retires in their 50's they move to the extra house, while the married son or daughter moves into the main house to take over the farm.
Family is something that is bery important for the Amish people, and they reject any ties to the outside world, such as electric, gas or telephone lines. Houses are painted in glossy colors, such as white, green, blue, brown or yellow. A mother raises up to six or seven children, and her primary responsability is to take care of them and the house. While the man is the main head of the household, he iis the one that manages the farm.

Amish average of children is from five to seven, but a new baby is always wlecome into the family. Children and parents must live and work together as a unit for economic survival and as well as the promulgation of their traditions. As soon as toddlers are old enough for simple chores, they begin to help, thay usualy feed and take care of the animals in the farm.
When they grow up to the age of 16, where they are officially adults, they have an important rite, which is called "rumspringa". In this rite they get a temporary relaxation of the rules, and allows young people to use cellphones, watch tv, go to the movies, drink alcohol, smoke tabacco, listen to the radio. This is where they can choose if theyy want to stay with their families, or if they want to go to the outside world, but if they choose to leave the Amish community, they would not be allowed to talk with their families and Amish friends again. Statistics shows that the majority of Amish teeneagers return to the Amish culture.
Amish belive in basic education for as long as it does not threaten their fundamental values. They were educated at home in the past. There are some Amish parents that have fought against the goverment attemps to consolidate Amish students into public because this would violate their religion principles.

When Menno Simons, a Catholic priest, started to doubt about the absolute power of the church, joined the Anabaptist movement. He was trained as a Franciscan monk, and he spent most of his life writing the Schleitheim Articles, taht were adopted in 1527 by Swiss Anabaptist and became the guidelines for the new brotherhood. Menno Simons followers were called Mennonites. The early Mennonites and also Anabaptist often migrated to escape persecution. Many fled to Germany, and here is where a Swiss-Mennonite bishop, called Jacob Ammann became the leader in a dissension regarding his belief in strict adherence to the Dutch Confession of 1632. Many locals supported Ammann, and became known as "Amish Mennonites" or only "Amish".
They would lately migrate to America to seek religious freedom. Several Amish groups accepted the inivtation of William Penn to come to Pennsylvania and receive cheap land for farming. William Penn believed that farming would be the base of the economy in the future, and he knew that the Amish people where good at farming.

Amish church takes place at Amish homes, Amish use basements, shops, and barns to hold service. Amish services last a long time-three hours is the typical length of Amish church. Early Anabaptist, fearing persecution from the State authorities, were forced to meet in secret, in forests and in caves, and thats why they hold the meetings of the church in their homes. The Ordnung is the unwritten set of rules and regulations that guide everyday Amish life. Meaning “order”, or “discipline”, this German word takes on a deeper meaning in the Amish context. The Ordnung provides the foundation for the Amish community.

We could say that farming is more than an occupation to the Amish, they belive it is a commandment form God that man is expected to work in harmony with soil and nature. Managing a farm without modern agricultural mothods is extremely physicaly and mentally difficult, tough, they are extremely good at it. The Amish reject all utilities from the outside world, so for power they use whater wheels and wind mills.

Amish are called "Plain People", because they dress without any kind of adornment. They've been dressing like this since the 16th century when Ammann preached that simple clothing was necessary to mantain humility and subdue pride. Men usually dress with black or dark suits, which are fastemed with hooks and eyes, and without an outside pocket, the trousers have no fly front but have a sailor-style. All men and boys wears hats outside. Women in the community use always the same type of pattern to sew for their families. They purchase a whole bolt of material and make a dress or shirt for each family member. As in the houses, they only use solid colors, such as black, blue, green, purple or brown. If a woman is single, she'd wear a white apron and a cape. Any deviation from the dress, both men and women, may cause them to be excommunicated.

The Ordnung, that is Amish, allows members to ride in cars and in buses, but not to own them. So instead of them, they use horse-drawn carriages for transportation. They are known as"Buggies". The normal speed for a buggy is from five to eight miles per hour. All Buggies are equipped with battery-operated lights and turn signals. In winter they use sleighs instead of wagons, they are used primarily for work. Farmers mantain a good stable pf orses to pull the wagons/sleighs, usually six horses for hauling and one or two horses for transportation.
