This was such a good reminder for me! I know I need to script questions, but I tend to not do this. I've taught the same thing for so long, and I know what I want/need to cover. However, even though I always reread and make notes, I don't script my questions. I don't always get the depth of response that I could if my questions were actually scripted prior to discussion. Doing this, combined with some sort of all-student response, will really push my classroom discussions to the next level and keep us on track.

I would say the Socratic Method is my favorite to try and incorporate into my Social Studies lessons. So much of what I teach can come back to the students life, so I try and challenge them to apply lessons learned from the information in history we are studying to the lives our students are living now.
Chapter 4 is a great reminder to make sure that I am planned out in my questions. The information I teach is pertinent; however, the questions (done correctly) is what can/will bring our students learning to the next level. Excellent chapter in a, so far, mindset challenging book.

One of my big goals for the upcoming school year is to do a better job of teaching vocabulary in my Algebra classes. I try to get them to picture what the word means, but for me it seems easy since I have used the vocabulary for 20 years on an almost daily basis. For the students it is difficult to picture what the word means because they are unfamiliar. When I read that the internet is full of pictures, a light bulb went off! Why not use google slides or drawings (or some other tool) to help them learn vocab? I am also planning to make one of my walls of my classroom into a word wall. I am pretty excited about this!

I loved mention of this vocabulary strategy because it is so true. For those students who are visual learners, this could help them to retain the meaning of the word so much better. In my previous instruction, I would have students draw their own picture of the word. It would be fun if they could use a digital tool to not only tell what the word is with its meaning/sentence, but also assign a picture they found to go with it. They could make their own digital word wall and share it with others in class.

This takes away from the attitude of “I’m not a good artist so I can’t draw a picture”, and it lets kids make connections to the words so they will remember them.

The reason this jumped out to me was because I get caught up in this "trusting my eyes" type of teaching. In the middle of a lecture or even shorter direct instruction I look around the room and feel I have a good read on the students' engagement. Even if I do have a good read on the students engagement, in the lesson, it does not mean I have a feel for how each student is grasping the information. This was a great heads up for me.

However, I do worry that when an administrator walks in that all they might see is an activity that’s boring with low engagement. However, I love how Kieschnick was so quick to point out that there’s so much more to direct instruction than what might initially meet the eye. I’m always looking for ways to make sure that I’m connecting with students while I instruct, and his ideas for ways to effectively combine technology with that were exactly what I needed.

I feel your pain @LoriMcDivitt! Some students get it and it is time to move on to continue the learning, but others struggle to grasp concepts even after reteaching. I have found that with continued exposure to the topics, students do catch on. It's frustrating when I have so many standards to teach and sometimes feel rushed to teach and expose students to all of them before testing begins in the spring. I liked mention of using technology to master direct instruction.

I've thrown this in with poetry, but I can see it tying to pre-assessments. One thing that teachers do too much of, especially with high-ability kids, is review. I"m hoping to use self-assessment with my advanced class to really get a feel for where we can go and to see how much we can grow.

+mattandjessica@gmail.com

After my appreciation for the author’s directness in the vocabulary chapter in saying that old school vocabulary instruction is not good instruction and needs to be replaces, I appreciated this chapters notes on how there is still a need for direct instruction within the classroom. I think sometimes we focus so much on what technology we can implement, how students can “discover” on their own, and new school ideas that it was good affirmation that sometimes students just need to hear and see me do something first. The quote “direct instructions greatest potential is when it’s used to teach new knowledge” helped to confirm to me when direct instruction is most important.

+bethboswell I too thought the part about teachers being transparent was an eye opener. I started writing our weekly goals on the board for students last year. In 2nd grade I hadn’t ever thought to do that before. It was amazing how they knew what the plan was and got more from our lessons. It made me think about when I go into a meeting or conference. When I am trying to figure out what exactly the instructor is teaching it distracts from me actually taking away what they are teaching. As an adult to determine this is easier but my kids are surely sometimes confused if they don’t know what the end goal is!

I love the idea of helping students take responsibility for their own learning. Exit tickets always gave me an idea of where students struggled but seemed like the students themselves didn’t make connections with their importance. I like the idea of “discussing” the results with them. In some cases I think it could help struggling students to see common errors and that they aren’t alone in the misconceptions.
