  • The National Film Registry is a board created by the U.S congress, manged by the library of congress in order to preserve all important american made films, essentially preserving parts of U.S History.

  • The once Multi-media mogul giant, Ted Turner (Pictured to the left) bought the rights to many classic black and white films, as well as their original tape copies . After gaining the rights to these films, he said he would colorized these movies, adding color to the old school black and white films. A large percent of Hollywood was not happy at all with this move, An array of people ranging from directors, executive produces, and the actors who started in those movies themselves protested this decision of his. He responded with these quotes: 
  • "The last time I checked, I owned the films that we're in the process of colorizing," 
    • "I can do whatever I want with them, and if they're going to be shown on television, they're going to be in color."

    After getting enough complaints, Congress passed The National Film Preservation Act in 1988 which also lead to the creation of the Nation film Registry.

     They must be Culturally, historically, and aesthetically important to the U.S. and its history. Culturally means films that somehow affected our culture. Historically would mean they represent or show a certain time period of time.   • Besides the classic films that may come to mind, there’s a few picks on this list that you may have never thought of being on this list. For instance, I’d say one of the most well known ‘films’ on the list that you wouldn’t be aware of is Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Now to go on the other side of the spectrum, a film that’s on the registry you probably never heard of would be Topaz by Dave Tatsuno. Topaz was a piece of home film that documented the life of him and his family during Japanese Internment.

They deserve to be enjoy and re-watched over and again in their most purest form because of what they mean to us now and what they’ll eventually mean to others. If some films aren’t preserved correctly or in some cases at all, you could possibly loose the movie for good if the only version that remains is the original tapes. For instance, around 80% of the silent era is gone because the companies either didn’t preserve them correctly or actually destroyed/burned them.Because of this for some films, unfortunately only a few minutes of their movies remain if lucky. It’s the closest thing we currently available to us and that’s reason enough besides the memories that comes from these movies. One of the biggest and most obvious example I can think of is Stars Wars. Everyone knows what Star Wars is, people can quote lines and recognize actors and characters who are in this film because of what a big impact it had on our culture. Heck, someone who hasn’t even seen the first movie probably knows at the very least who Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader is. Another example, albeit very extreme one is Birth of a Nation. Even though It’s an extremely racist film full of a false history of America’s beginning, it shows not only some innovative films techniques but shows us that these behaviors towards people of color wasn’t considered as horrible as we see them today. Because of both of those reasons it’s important to preserve how some people used to view things.
