What does international-mindedness mean to you? What does it mean to be a “global citizen”?

To me international mindedness goes hand in hand with being a global citizen. In today's globalized world it is almost impossible to not get in touch with people from other countries and cultures, who most likely speak a different language. Thus it is paramount to gain intercultural communicative competence and thereby understand that culturally there is no right or wrong. We see the world primarily through lenses influenced by our own cultural background but as an internationally minded person and global citizen we need to be aware of that and be able to take these lenses of from time to time.

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

Fortunately many schools today have realized just how important it is to prepare students for global citizenship. Many schools carry out exchanges, involve students in online tandems or Skype projects.
Especially in the natural sciences like Biology most publications are made in English and thus it is crucial that students have an understanding of the English language and are able to use English as a lingua franca also in a scientific context.

Since I am currently teaching Biology in English but in Germany and to German students, I am constantly using texts, videos and material in general from the English-speaking world or other sources that use English as a lingua franca.
By doing this the students' horizon is broadened and I am also always trying to draw their attention to different use of language/words which sometimes reveals an underlying cultural concept or belief.

I think it is crucial that students understand that in a globalized world collaboration with people from different countries, traveling to different countries and oftentimes even moving (temporarily or permanently) to another country are all part of their future (working) lives. I try to help my students with this by creating an awareness for this whenever possible, implementing different sources from different cultures into my teaching and conducting international projects and exchanges.

One project that I conducted with my year 11 students was a Skype project with a school in Australia. Each student was assigned an Australian tandem partner and over the course of 5 weeks the student teams met on Skype for 90min each week (during their respective class time) and completed pre- and post-tasks before and after each session. The overall topic was ecology and we compared the different ecosystems around our respective schools.
Although the students were quite nervous at first having to communicate and collaborate with a person on the other side of the world, they all enjoyed the project very much. Besides the goals my teacher partner and I wanted to reach in the field of Biology , we also helped our students to find friends on the other side of the world. A lot of them are still in touch today and are planning to visit each other when they finish school.
