He starts out as a naive child, but by the end he has matured quite a bit. In Go Set a Watchman, Jem is dead but he still is part of the story. When Jem died,  Alexandra wanted Jean Louise to stay with Atticus, but Jean Louise wanted to follow her dreams. There could be a psychological connection here. It could be Harper Lee had someone if her life like Alexandra who tried to stop her from living her dreams. In To Kill A Mocking Bird, Scout is not very independent, she is convinced that Atticus has taught her the wrong way to read because Miss Caroline told her. She says "-and she says you taught me all wrong, so we can't ever read any more, ever. Please don't send me back, please sir."(To Kill a Mockingbird, 24) Then in Go Set a Watchman, she gets french kissed by a boy and later thinks that she is pregnant. Scout almost kills her self and is caught by Calpurnia. She says to Clapurnia " I'm going to have a baby" Calpurnia responds "When?" Preceded by scout saying "Tomorrow!" "Where in the name of sense did you get a notion like that?"(Go Set a Watchman, 135) was Calpurnias response. Then Calpurnia gives her the Birds and the bees talk and makes several comments about how sheltered and uneducated she was.
