- Students gain the ability to learn about their own environment.
- Students interact with their environment, learning from their manipulations and observations.
EXAMPLE: Students are learning about photosynthesis, and monitor the growth of two small house plants. One is covered with a glass bell jar. After a few days, the students observe that plant is withering. Based on what they know about plant respiration, the students should be able to determine why the sealed plant is withering.

- Students learn to understand their experience, particularly if what they see is unexpected.
- Not knowing what is going on is beneficial to learning.
EXAMPLE: Students are to read a selection of articles about gene editing, both for and against. They are then asked to write a reflection about the articles, and to articulate their opinion, citing articles when necessary. They must support their reasoning if they are for or against it.

Authentic Learning (Complex/Contextualized)

- Students learn better when ideas are given a real-world application.
- Learners must be allowed to do things as professionals might do them.
EXAMPLE: Students are taken to tour the city water treatment plant. They visit the laboratory and learn about water testing. They tour the general facilities, and see how all the waste is extracted from the water before it is cleaned and treated to be redistributed. Among the debris is plastic, "flushable" toilet tissue, and other non-biodegradable items. Students are asked to write a reflection about their experience, and to detail the path that such non-biodegradable items take from the home to their "final resting place".

- Learners are more successful if there is a goal in sight.
- Learners must have ownership of their learning process.
EXAMPLE: Students are allowed to complete an independent research project for the school year. They will have access to the laboratories and reasonable supplies. They must choose a topic. They must then write a list of supplies and an experimental design to be approved by the teacher. After approval, the student will conduct their research and write a lab report based on their findings. The teacher will provide support when needed, but the student will be working independently to accomplish their own research.

- A good team will always work together.
- A good team will have different members with different strengths.
- Students should be assessed as a group AND individually.
EXAMPLE: A group of three students are asked to give a fifteen minute presentation on a topic of their choosing. They must make a PowerPoint and collaboratively present the information. They will need to do research, and work together as far as what areas each student will be responsible for researching. Once completed, each student will grade their partners on their share of the work.
