My artwork shows James Madison and a (woman) slave. Like most men during the late 17th century, James bought slaves, abused them and sometimes even raped them. The woman in the mirror represents how awful she was treated and thats why she was constantly “broken”. This relates to slavocracy and democracy because as a slave she could not stand up for herself and was treated like an object. James is an example of democracy since had full charge and the freedom to do anything he wished to the slaves. No one perceived him as a bad person because back then it was normal.
