Self Sufficiency within the Walls family is very heavily needed, some examples include Brian and Jeanette having to dumpster-dive for food along with having to stick up for one another like that time Brian got touch by his grandmother.
"But we were just protecting ourselves," Jeannette said as she try to explain the issue after he came back from Phoenix. Which leads the Walls to live in that house in Welch. They didn't have plumbing, electricity, or even bathroom outside. In which they had use a bucket and dump outside.

The Glass Castle: Non-conformity

"I am an addict for excitement," Rose Mary said. In The Glass Castle, the Walls family would move whenever the mood struck them and they would just pack and move then live for awhile and it would be cycle until the Walls move to Welch. This way of living cause the Walls to live off the grid and having to basically live off anything they could scratch up. Also, this way of living cause them not to care about what others thought about. One example, was when they started to throw away their garbage in the foundation of the Glass Castle. with Rose-Mary stating, "Life is too short to worry about what other people think."

The Glass Castle: Broken promises

Broken promises are promises that were never fulfilled and were forgotten/uncared about by the person who promise to fulfilled. In The Glass Castle, Rex promised to Jeannette that he would build the glass castle which the foundation was made and done with. However, the foundation becomes a dump for their garbage. Plus, when Jeannette was close to leaving Welch, Rex still insisted that he would be able to make the glass castle one day but, at that point Jeanette knew it was never going to happen. This quotes represent this them; "Dad, you'll never build the glass castle." and "Have you lost faith in your old man."

The Glass Castle: Chaos and Order

Chaos is disorder and there's no boundaries and rule within it. Order is control by the books and it's uphold by boundaries alongside with the rules. In The Glass Castle, you see what happens with Chaos and Order in the Walls family. Chaos controls a majority of their life where they go living place to place alongside of the problems they encounter like no money coming in to their household. Order happens much later once the Walls children move to New York, they're working jobs and going to college. Alongside with Brian being a cop much to they dismay of Rex. "You did wrong," Rex said after the incident with Irma. "And now all of us are banished."

The Glass Castle: Acceptance

Acceptance is when a person realizes the truth of something and just deals the consequences of this truth. In The Glass Castle, Jeanette had to accept that her parents would never be able to take care of her or her siblings. Also, Jeanette had to accept that she was in charge of her own destiny after living Welch for years at this point. Some quotes from The Glass Castle, "I was so angry at Dad that I couldn't bear the idea of him recusing me. Also, "I knew it was Dad, but at the same time. I couldn't believe he'd stoop this low." These quotes show how Jeanette has accept her father, Rex as man who would stoop low for money by either pimping her out or stealing money from a piggy bank.

The Glass Castle: Reality Vs. Fantasy

Reality vs Fantasy is the belief of reality which is how objects appear as they ran with no questions about. On the other hand, fantasy is an idea based off fiction rather than fact. Within The Glass Castle, Jeannette had to deal with Rex
believing in things that were out to get them such as the mafia, labor unions, and even the government. When in reality, it seems like there was nothing after them and this was a figment of Rex's imagination. One example from The Glass Castle is "We got to go, the mob caught on to me." This happens when the Walls were living in a mining town in the desert and everything was fine mostly an then Rex says that the mob is after them which is never proven to be factual.
