I believe it's important to keep my students prepared and protected childhoods in mind when creating my curriculum. Prepared childhood is the attention given to the child's future, and protected childhood is the happiness and well being of the child. As a teacher I want to make sure my students are having fun and are interested in what we are learning. I want to create lessons and activities that really target their interests. Also it's important to make sure my students are given the skills to be successful. In chapter 4 of American Education it says that if students don't have a combination of soft and hard skills they will never succeed. I need to be sure that I provide opportunities for my children to practice and master those skills.

I believe that learning is something every child and adult is capable of doing. In the article discussing Ruby Payne's framework by Paul Gorski says that Payne's perspective, "falls in line with the kinds of inequalities that ensure her privilege rather than disrupting or even mentoring them." Children in poverty may need a little TLC, but they will always be capable of learning and obtaining the same skills as upper and middle class students do. I also believe learning can be effected by the issues discussed in American Education chapter two. It mentioned a lot about bullying, school crime, and nutrition. If a child is involved in one of those I mentioned it will affect the way they learn. They will be more distracted and be spacey during times of learning. I believe it's important to make sure that everyone feels safe and valued in my classroom, so they can learn as much as possible, so they can become successful.

I believe that teaching is a job for someone who is passionate about making a difference in children's lives. As a teacher I'll be teaching children of all kinds of backgrounds, so it's important to recognize your biases and put them aside, so you can better accommodate for you students. It's also important to understand what kind of society your students come from. In American Education Chapter 7 it explains the two societies as being Collectivist and Individualistic. On page 184 it states, "In Individualistic cultures, behavior is primarily determined by personal attributes and feelings," it also explains what a collectivist culture as being, "people relying on their relationships to others to judge their own happiness." Understanding this as a teacher would help understand better where your students believe are important. The book also states that you can be from both societies. I just believe understanding this as a teacher will be you as a teacher and help your students succeed even more than before.

In the American Education chapter two outlines the purpose for school, "regulating sexuality through sex education courses, reducing crime through moral instruction and character education, improving children's health with school nurse, doctors, and dentists; regulating student's cleanliness; and providing health instruction, improving the nutrition of students with school cafeterias and home economics instruction, and creating a sense of community through after-school programs and extracurricular activities and building school spirit." I have seen each one of these elements while going being in high school as well as working in schools.

I believe that all my future students are capable learners. I also believe they are just children who sometimes don't know how to express their emotions in a positive way. Last week we talked a lot about the School to Prison Pipeline. and the zero tolerance. When I am a teacher someday I want to keep in mind that students need to feel like school is a safe place. I also will make sure that my students feel like they can come to me about anything. If I sent students to the office I want it to be because of something dyer not something like Nancy had her phone out in the middle of class. I believe all my students will respect me if I give them respect. They are just kids,

I believe students learn best when they have feel safe in a classroom, feel loved, and when having a teacher who is appropriately invested in their academic success. When we watched the unnatural causes video in class is discussed when those who live in poverty don't have the correct heath support. So when children are able to go get to proper medicine for their illnesses or cast for a broken bone they learn best as well.

I believe my students best learn when I incorporate all the ways of learning in a lesson plan. I also believe they will learn best when we take into consideration their living situations. In the Unnatural Video we watched in class it talked a lot about those citizens living in poverty and how it effects the way they learn in school. If a child in my class is living in poverty and doesn't have the means to go to the doctor to get medicine or a cast for a broken leg then that will distract them from learning in class. Being aware of those students and making sure they are most comfortable in class will help them learn better.

I believe community/family is..

I believe community and family is the root of everything. If you want to know something about someone ask them where they are from and what their family is like. You'll learn a lot, but I also believe you have to want to know these things. As a teacher I believe that you should want to have that want to know about your students. Not only will you get a greater understanding of them, but you'll understand their moods and why they may be acting the way they are acting. From the "For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood and the Rest of Y'll Too" in chapter 2 page 21 if further explains the importance of knowing where your students come from. It says, "to be in touch with the community, one has to enter into the physical places where the students live, and work to be invited into the emotion-laden spaces the youth inhabit." Further in this section, it talks about the author's own experience. Him and his sister was walking home from school just as he got into the doors of the apartments he was living he heard shots ring out right outside where he just entered. He was shocked and his little sister pulled him through the second doors. Once they got into their apartment the sister told the mom and she told him when you hear shots you get down no matter what. So a couple weeks later he was sitting in class, the teacher had the door open into the hallway, and all of sudden there was a loud noice. He instantly went and hid under his desk. His teacher assumed he was acting a clown and sent him to the office and he of course played it off. But if the teacher would of known the kinds of things he goes through she would of understood why he did that. She wouldn't of assumed that he was just being silly.

I believe collaboration is...

I believe collaboration is when each member of the classroom is given the opportunity to contribute in class discussion or in group discussion. In the Rethinking Schools article Decolonizing the Classroom: Lesson in Multicultural Education it states,"In Mr. Anderson's class, students knowledge about communities, cultures, and diversity didn't matter, especially if it contradicted his own. He didn't use his student's Funds of Knowledge, which provides a negative experiences for his students." This article focused a lot on how two different teachers conducted their classrooms. Collaboration is a very important aspect of a classroom. To create a community within the class you need to allow students to be able to speak their experiences, so you as a teacher can learn more about it as well as the peers in the classroom. Shutting students down devalues their experiences. So collaboration is very important.

I believe teacher activism is when a teacher stands up for the students rights. It's when teacher realize that their minority students matter and deserve a fair chance in society and in our educational system. In the article the teachers, "How on Elementary School Sparked a Citywide Movement to Make Black Student's Lives Matter," planned this big protest to help get their students more right. This is a great example of teacher activism.
