What is Shays Rebellion?

Shays Rebellion was an important historical event that occurred in the year 1786 and brought great conflict and chaos to the state of Massachusetts. It would not only bring chaos but also be the cause of many insurmountably important events that would shape the history of the United States as we know it, and have a direct affect on how we live our lives today. Following the Revolutionary War Britain had debts that were expected to be paid off, however many of the states could not do this right away. Massachusetts was one of these, and to fulfill these needs they raised taxes. This upset many, including Daniel Shays, thus leading to him causing an uprising and forming a rebellion of mostly destitute farmers affected by the raised taxes, in protest of the raised taxes. The actions of the rebellion would include things such as seizing courthouses, and towards the end taking control of an armory. The rebellion took a significant amount of time to stop because the federal government was weak in authority at the time. This rebellion is important to us because the weak government's slow actions caused people to question the current state of the government leading to the constitutional convention which would change the shape of the United States Forever. The constitutional convention is the groundwork for our current constitution which is why this historical event should never be overlooked.

Here we can see a map of all the locations of incidence regarding the rebellion. The rebellion itself started in Northampton, Massachusetts, but would later spread all across the state. You can see the different courthouses that were seized, as well as the final location of incidence, the Springfield Armory. It is there that the rebels were finally put down once a few of their men were killed by state troopers.

Rebellion Memorial

Here we have a real-life photo of the memorial commemorating the rebellion. This memorial was made at the exact location of the final battle regarding the rebellion. This goes to show that the importance of this event was significant enough to us to be memorialized, as it should be.

Constitutional Convention Introduction

Here we have an article printed by the Pennsylvania Packet. This article was essentially letting the citizens of the United States know that the new constitution was being implemented. Remember, this Constitution was a result of the Constitutional Convention, an event which was created due to the events and outcomes of the Rebellion.

Scuffle at the courthouse

Here we have a painting (that you can actually purchase) depicting one of the many conflicts and scuffles brought on by the rebellion. This particular painting is based on a scuffle that occurred between Shaysites and a tax collector at a courthouse in Springfield.

Assault on the armory

Here we have a painting depicting one of the if not the most important events to occur during the rebellion. This painting shows the final assault done by the Shaysites on the Springfield armory, which would be the final breaking point of the rebellion. Following this event soon after would be the Constitutional Convention.

Here we have a portrait from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. This portrait depicts two very prominent figures from the Rebellion, one being Job Shattuck who was responsible for shutting down a state court in Concord, and one, of course, being Daniel Shays himself
