Thoughts on "Open Your Door" ... An open door classroom opens the door for more positivity and community, not just for the teachers but the students too. An open door allows for us to share/see the highs and the lows, the success and the failures. It also provides a safe, comfortable foundation for taking risks. An open door provides us with new perspectives. An open door can help ease or erase those fears of being judged or the fear of seeming to judge. Thanks for "listening!" -- Stephanie Griffin

Things that really stood out to me in this article is making mistakes. We encourage the students to always try and if they make a mistake or fail then keep trying; however as adults I don't think we do the same process. It is almost comforting to see others make mistakes to or have a lesson not go exactly as planned because that is where the reflection and learning come into play. Also succeeding and getting excited about that. Sometimes the quiet kind of teacher doesn't always boast about themselves so if someone else sees great things you are doing in your classroom and they point out those points of success it gives those quiet teachers confidence.

I love the idea of an "open door" classroom! Everyone approaches teaching from different life and classroom experiences. The more we open our rooms to one another and share, the better we will all be as educators. I feel like I am constantly looking for new ideas and strategies so that I can best reach all students. Having an open door policy with my teammates would be an excellent way to see their strategies in action. Also, I love the idea of using the experiences, both the successes and the failures, to bond with one another and to show unity to our students. As we model our philosophies about teamwork and kindness, our students are more likely to buy into the concepts and join us as we work together to build community. I can't wait to hear all of your thoughts as well! ~ Brandy Best

Open doors… a lovely idea inherent of positives to be gained for sure, but needs to come from a culture of trust; something that isn’t automatically assumed, and takes time to cultivate, but well worth the wait.

The idea of an "open door" classroom is both amazing and terrifying! At my previous school while teaching 2nd grade, I had the privilege of observing 6th grade ELA, 5th grade and kindergarten classrooms. I found elements (organization, centers routines, ways to prepare my students for the next grade level, etc.) in each of their classrooms that I was dying to apply to my own. It also connected to me to teachers I might not have interacted with regularly, expanding my school community. Can't wait to exchange some "Pineapple Welcomes" this year! -- Jesse Hogan

Today we mentioned "sharing" our students: the idea that all the students in my grade level and in the rest of the school are not yours or mine, but ours. By watching our colleagues, we would see the ways other teachers show love to their students and learn new ways to relate to them. This idea of open doors would help further develop an environment in which we all care for our students, not just the ones on our own rosters.
-Katie Crosby

When I was a young teacher I was terrified about being observed because I wanted to have it all figured out first, and I agree with the author... I’m more “myself” when there are only students in the room... I’m definitely more self-conscious when other adults see my crazy 😂. But through some really great colleagues I’ve found that peer observation has been incredibly beneficial, especially as a fine arts teacher... to see the way other fine arts teachers teach and manage their classrooms, and to get feedback from them about my own teaching that will be more nuanced and content-specific than an administrator or general classroom teacher might be able to provide. (Though there are definitely benefits in observing and being observed by classroom teachers as well! Seeing how my students behave in a core subject, seeing ways to provide continuity from their classroom to mine, etc.) -Bethany Broesder

An open door classroom is one that everyone can benefit from. No, it is not always easy to allow someone in to your territory or feel like you’re invading others. However, in order to grow upon your skills and styles, we need the input and visions of others to excel. When we collaborate with each other, we’re showing our students that we care enough to learn new tips and tricks. We also show them that we see them as individuals outside of our four walls. I can’t wait to blossom in many ways from each and every one of you! Like Mrs. Wojtecki said (in some form or fashion), “there will never be a day that you will stop learning. There’s always room for growth.” -- Leanna Foreman

Loved this, "Something powerful happens when students see their teachers together. You become larger than the sum of your parts, stronger not only in number, but because this simple show of cooperation tells them you are united, which is an important message to send to kids."
