Too often, research shows, suspensions and expulsions lead to students falling behind, dropping out, and eventually funneling into the juvenile justice system. 

The use of restorative practices allows the studets to have some buy in to the process- their voice is heard.

The emphasis is that relationships are paramount to student success. The zero tolerance and punitive models  remove the students from the classroom but ultimately never resolve the original conflict which may arise again.
