Verbal feedback on specific ways to improve skills

Music: I find verbal feedback the most effective, accompanied by modeling done by myself or another student who is doing a skill in question correctly.

Most students respond well to rubrics and the process around rubrics. One student, who I'm doing the reflection on, wasn't able to access written feedback like that tho. So it's not perfect.

My favorite way is the least effective. Students do not read their feedback - They submit videos - I watch and I give them feedback...but that is clearly a dead end and an area of growth opportunity for me. What they love, and what is most effective is on the spot...direct - even public feedback on their signing skills.

Over time, I think this has allowed students to perform better on projects overall. It also gives them an opportunity to check their work before they turn it in. It also gives us common understanding around the expectations for projects.

When students are directed on the spot to correct - it is a lot more effective - especially when direct, immediate and public

Create more opportunities for students to self evaluate their skill level in a measurable way. Let them try it their way without instruction or with little instruction and then see how they can improve with instruction/guidance.

Verbal feedback in a performance-based setting allows for a quick feedback loop. Students know right away if they are doing something well, so they will continue to do so. Or if they need to improve or correct something, they can start doing that immediately.

Allowing students to write responses back on the grade (rubric attached) to dispute and return. This may create more students interested in actually reading feedback.

I would like to find a method of feedback that is more accessible to all learners. If written isn't the way to go, and verbal feedback isn't great for complex feedback... what's the happy medium? I'll need more research
