         <description><![CDATA[<div>Understanding how 504 plans work and who is eligible for it. <br><br>This type of plan falls under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This is the part of the federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against public school students with disabilities. That includes students with learning and attention issues who meet certain criteria.<br><br></div><ul><li>Has a physical or mental impairment that “substantially” limits one or more major life activity (such as reading or concentrating).</li><li>Has a record of the impairment.</li><li>Is regarded as having an impairment, or a significant difficulty that isn’t temporary. This federal law also requires schools to continue providing services for the student as long as they are needed through their K-12 schooling and up to age 22. The services are provided through a plan or blueprint called an Individualized Education Program—the IEP.<br><br>IDEA lists 13 different disability categories<br>under which 3- through 21-year-olds may be<br>eligible for services. The disability categories listed<br>in IDEA are:<br>• autism;<br>• deaf-blindness;<br>• deafness;<br>• emotional disturbance;<br>• hearing impairment;<br>• intellectual disability;<br>• multiple disabilities;<br>• orthopedic impairment;<br>• other health impairment;<br>• specific learning disability;<br>• speech or language impairment;<br>• traumatic brain injury; or<br>• visual impairment (including blindness).</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), there is an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with the youngster’s day to day functioning. Symptoms of ODD may include:<br><br></div><ul><li>Frequent temper tantrums</li><li>Excessive arguing with adults</li><li>Often questioning rules</li><li>Active defiance and refusal to comply with adult requests and rules</li><li>Deliberate attempts to annoy or upset people</li><li>Blaming others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior</li><li>Often being touchy or easily annoyed by others</li><li>Frequent anger and resentment</li><li>Mean and hateful talking when upset</li><li>Spiteful attitude and revenge seeking</li></ul><div>The symptoms are usually seen in multiple settings, but may be more noticeable at home or at school. One to sixteen percent of all school-age children and adolescents have ODD. The causes of ODD are unknown, but many parents report that their child with ODD was more rigid and demanding that the child’s siblings from an early age. Biological, psychological and social factors may have a role.<br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.<br><br></div><ul><li><strong>Inattention</strong> means a person wanders off task, lacks persistence, has difficulty sustaining focus, and is disorganized; and these problems are not due to defiance or lack of comprehension.</li><li><strong>Hyperactivity </strong>means a person seems to move about constantly, including in situations in which it is not appropriate; or excessively fidgets, taps, or talks. In adults, it may be extreme restlessness or wearing others out with constant activity.</li><li><strong>Impulsivity</strong> means a person makes hasty actions that occur in the moment without first thinking about them and that may have high potential for harm; or a desire for immediate rewards or inability to delay gratification. Individuals suffering from true internal pathology represent a<br>relatively small segment of the population. A caring society tries to provide the best<br>services for such individuals; doing so includes taking great care not to misdiagnose<br>others whose "symptoms" may be similar, but are caused by factors other than<br>internal pathology. Such misdiagnoses lead to policies and practices that exhaust<br>available resources in ineffective ways. A better understanding of how the<br>environment might cause problems and how focusing on changing the environment<br>might prevent problems is essential.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Psychotic disorders are severe mental disorders that cause abnormal thinking and perceptions. People with psychoses lose touch with reality. Two of the main symptoms are delusions and hallucinations. Delusions are false beliefs, such as thinking that someone is plotting against you or that the TV is sending you secret messages. Hallucinations are false perceptions, such as hearing, seeing, or feeling something that is not there.<br><br></div><div><a href="https://medlineplus.gov/schizophrenia.html">Schizophrenia</a> is one type of psychotic disorder. People with <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/bipolardisorder.html">bipolar disorder</a> may also have psychotic symptoms. Other problems that can cause psychosis include alcohol and some drugs, brain tumors, brain infections, and stroke.<br><br></div>]]></description>
