The Drought that Lasted Forever and a Day

Earlier this week, I got the chance to sit down and chat with Moki, a local farmer from the Cherokee tribe, to hear his views about the catastrophic crisis of the southwest drought that had occurred in the late 1800’s to year 1880.

Moki said he brought his wife Kaya, his daughter Kele (age 5) and only the most valuable possessions to their new home, located in the state of Oklahoma. They settled there after they had been kicked out of their homeland by President Jackson in 1830. The indigenous people have to now learn how to cultivate the land and survive on the new territories they have been given.

When the “Southwest drought” hit the Great Plains, in the late 1800’s it was considered the worst drought that had occurred in the past 90 years, it had not rained since last August. Which after considering the hiatus of precipitation and high temperatures left the land dry to the bone. The drought immediately had a ripple effect. It made the Cherokee tribes livestock, crops, and native trees to all die, fish to migrate, water sources and vegetation became sparse and there was a decrease in Spirituality throughout the tribe. As for, the political and social side of things, they also became virtually unstable.

The Native Americans live solely off their own land. This meant the natives main source of food comes primarily from whatever they produced in the harvest and they look to the local rivers and streams for fish. Therefore, if the crops don't produce enough food and the fish migrate the other direction. They don't have a solid, reliable source of food.

Moki explains how he remembers the drastic changes that had occurred back then and how the “Abrupt climate change can impose conditions like a drought and it's virtually impossible to for societies, especially based on agriculture to survive”(Worthington 1).

Moki said a water shortage caused the waterholes and rivers to dry up and became just dirt. Therefore, the animals had become weak and died. He also saw the drought began a major crisis of a shortage of traditional native foods. In Oklahoma, he did as he has done in the past and continued to grow crops in long rows along with some sunflower fields he said. Moki’s crops were thriving, looked healthy, lively in the climate and soil. From the tribes dwellings, as far as the eye could see were green rows of crops, a few watering holes, sunflower patches and pastures for the animals, creating a beautiful view. All were destroyed when the drought occurred. The water shortage interfered with the access to viable water to drink, wash , irrigate crops and cook meals with. With Farmers, now without adequate water to irrigate along with these conditions, the soil became unsuitable and infertile. Moki shared that the cash crops like the melons, berries, oats, corn, and squash stopped producing as many crops as they had previously. Due to the steady "high temperatures and lack of rain meant most crops did not grow. But that was not the case with mung beans. Mr.Muller says that crop did well because it can grow even when there is not much rain"(VOA,1). When the farmers in the Cherokee tribe couldn’t supply any more food, that was when the food shortage became an entirely new issue and the food insecurity impacted the tribe. It required the society to learn the wise lesson of how to conserve, value, and preserve what food supply they, fortunately, had left. With the native's diet now consisting primarily of what leftover crops like corn, beans, and very little protein. It left most people hungry, but taught the Cherokees how to successfully rationalized their resources, and food servings to ensuring they have more food for the rest of the period of food insecurity that they would have to endure, to insure that no one in the tribe will starve to death.

Work Cited-

Pauls, Elizabeth Prine. “Native American.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 19 Jan. 2018, www.britannica.com/topic/Native-American/Native-American-history.

“One in 4 Native Americans Is Food Insecure.” Move For Hunger, 9 May 2018, www.moveforhunger.org/one-in-4-native-americans-is-food-insecure/

Long Drought Affects Farmers in Southwestern US, VOA Correspondent Greg Falkus, 5 Oct. 2014, learningenglish.voanews.com/a/long-drought-affects-farmers-in-southwestern-us/2470643.html.

Worthington, Daryl. “CATASTROPHIC CLIMATE CHANGE CAUSED NATIVE AMERICANS’ DECLINE.” Www.newhistorian.com, 1 Feb. 2017, www.newhistorian.com/catastrophic-climate-change-caused-native-americans-decline/7959/.

Wells, Julia. “American Indians and Their Enviorment.” Center History New Media , 2013, chnm.gmu.edu/tah-loudoun/blog/lessons/american-indians-and-their-environment/.

Gallo, Kevin, and Eric Wood. “Historical Drought Events of the Great Plains Recorded by Native Americans.” Great Plains Research, 30 Apr. 2015, mrcc.illinois.edu/mw_climate/docs/GreatPlainsResearch25-Gallo2015.pdf.

Jenny Mendoza

Collins

3rd period

4 September 2018

When the white settlers kick us out of our land we had to move up west we were suffering a massive drought that was affecting our food supply because we didn't know anything about this land. Another point that Bunku said “we just don't have the water available to us that we used to.”

The white settlers came to our land and told us that we had until sundown to leave our land because they need it the land. If we didn't give them the land they would kill all my family. Quetza, my wife, and I decided to leave our land they told us that we could go up west that's where everyone was going.

We started our journal we traveled for many suns, we ran out of food, and water. I tried to find food by hunting ,and grabbing barrys from the trees but it didn't last so long. We were almost getting to where we were going to settle but the land was very different from were we were coming from the land was, there were no rivers by were we used to be greenland, trees ,and the most important thing river.”climate change has truly affected us in terms of the past when we’ve had less drought.”

The land was dry and didnt have rivers by so that was affecting us because we did not have the acres of land to plant on or the water supply. We had to travel from sunset to sundown to get to the closer river that we had.

My wife, Quetza was not feeling well she got sick and could not do anything we didn't know what she had. She died there is when i lost almost everything the only thing left were my children. By the time that we were trying to get better to get over my wife death. when the white men came to settle close to our land and we were confused because the kick us out of our land why would we let them stay he were we live. There is when we decided to kick them out to so we prepared to fight with them because we knew he wouldn't leave if we wolf ask to we won the fight and lived in peace.

We had someone on our team go up and interview this miracle family. The daughters name is Also One which means “independent”, the mothers name is Aiyana which means “ endless beauty” , and the fathers name is Bidzell which means “he is strong”. We interviewed he Bodaway family who was devastated by the fact that many of their loved ones were very badly hit by an outbreak of many diseases that didn't have a cure. They were telling us that they had many family members and friends die from these deadly diseases. “Disease ravished these communities. it is believed the smallpox alone killed over half the population affecting mostly young and older members ” because they were the most weak . They lacked immunity and they didn't have any vaccines at this time. Numerous diseases were brought including small pox, chicken pox,and measles.”The smallpox killed most of my family” they told us. They said that smallpox left many scars and eventually killed you. The first symptoms would show up between 7-17 days. They said “surgery was very painful and there was no effective ananthestics”. After a while they finally came out with the only vaccine for smallpox. We were very heart broken that we had to hear this story. They told us that the way it spread was through coughs, sharing drinks and and many many more ways you can get any of the diseases. So make sure at home you are washing your hands, not drinking after each other , and covering your mouth when you cough. So you don't have to go through what the Bodaway family did.

Citations:

“Home.” 1850s | My Place for Teachers, myplace.edu.au/decades_timeline/1800/decade_landing_20.html?tabRank=3.

Alfredo Vallejo

Collins,Erin B

3rd period

28 September 2018

The Cherokee are an indigenous Native American tribe, originally from the regions of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. Descendants of the original Cherokee Natives can be found today in Oklahoma and scattered in their original regions. While most Cherokee today speak English, many also speak the Cherokee Indian language.

“My name is Agiha which means (he fights) and my edoda(father),Akecheta which means (fighter), who have teach me everything i know . my Dad told me that they originally moved from the Great Lakes region to the Southern Appalachian Mountains, and that they were hunters and farmers and they moved from place to place to be able to find resources.”

(Trail of Tears was the Cherokee name for what the Americans called Indian Removal. During the 1800's, the US government created an "Indian Territory" in Oklahoma and sent all the eastern Native American tribes to live there. Some tribes willingly agreed to this plan. Other tribes didn't want to go, and the American army forced them. The Cherokee tribe was one of the largest eastern tribes, and they didn't want to leave their homeland. The Cherokees were peaceful allies of the Americans, so they asked the Supreme Court for help. The judges decided the Cherokee Indians could stay in their homes. But the President, Andrew Jackson, sent the army to march the Cherokees to Oklahoma anyway. They weren't prepared for the journey, and it was winter time. Thousands of Cherokee Indians died on the Trail of Tears. Many Native Americans from other tribes died too. It was a terrible time in history. )

“We are part of the “Cherokee Tribe”, it was one of the other tribes there is,my dad have taught me ,how to hunt, and use tools to be able to fight and protect our village .We hunt in groups, tribes would join together for hunting expeditions.Dears or venisons, would be a good meal for our village, we used some parts of the animals like the skin for clothing and bones for tools.”

Cherokee men wore breechcloths and leggings,Cherokee women wore wraparound skirts made out of wavenfiber or deersin, they wore “moccasins” which means (shoe, made of deerskin) .Men decorated their faces and bodies extensively with art and also painted themselves bright colors in times of war.

“We also are into fishing,Agiha said , it helps us a lot in some situations where there were not deers or vanisons in winter seasons. It helps us survive, our village was thankful for everything we had.Farming was one of the mains sources of food. The women were responsible for the house, farming, and the family. We farmed vegetables such as corn, squash, and beans”. The main crop that the Native Americans grew was corn, which they called maize. Maize was eaten by many of the American Indian tribes because it could be stored for the winter and ground into flour.

Work cited:
“Native American Food.” Eskimo/Inuit Legends (Folklore, Myths, and Traditional Indian Stories)http://www.native-languages.org/food.htm

Wells, Julia. “American Indians and Their Environment.” The Minstrel Show,http://chnm.gmu.edu/tah-loudoun/blog/lessons/american-indians-and-their-environment/

Alchin, Linda. “Native American Indian Tribes.” Facts, Clothes, Food and History ***, Siteseen Limited ,16 Jan.2018,

https://www.warpaths2peacepipes.com/indian-tribes/cherokee-tribe.htm

Cherokee Food - What Did Cherokee People Eat?” Quatr.us Study Guides, Publisher Name Quatr.us Study Guides Publisher Logo, 8 Apr. 2018, https://quatr.us/nativeamerican/cherokee-food-cherokee-people-eat.htm
