I knew that I wanted to incorporate reflective sunlight as I love the pattern the sun creates as it shines through my blinds in the mornings. After brainstorming stylistic ideas, I decided to use fabric as a prop as this relates to me as a fashion design student and my future career. I used a white linen bedsheet as linen is my favourite fabric and is at the core of all my fashion design projects, white is also my go to colour in any situation. Having the reflective light shining on my wardrobe, I had to have precise framing and angles to only capture the plain cream door without the edges or mirror doors next to it. This didn’t leave me with much room for experimenting with angles. I originally wanted to use a low angle and rule of thirds framing but this didn’t work well with the setting. The meaning of my name, Sterre, is ‘little star’ so I have grown up with many connotations to stars. I have always loved looking at the night sky ever since I was a child and since moving to the hinterland, I stand outside and look at the stars most nights. I have also developed a strong interest in astrology and related ideologies like human design and am very fascinated in how a person’s day, time, and place of birth effects their personality and so many other things. These three things lead me to choosing a star map for the basis of my self-map. I found a website which generated a star map for the day, time and place I was born. I saved this star map and traced over it in Illustrator. Experimenting with expanding the constellations in a more abstract way rather than in the circle I traced them from, I placed them over an image of myself spinning with a bedsheet. This was my original concept and plan; however, it didn’t look how I had hoped and felt disjointed rather than flowing as one, so I decided to work with the constellations in the original circle. I changed my image to the chosen self-image which worked well with the circle format of a typical star map. Using the clipping tool, I cut my self-image to fit the circle of the star map. I then placed in the same image again, in its full size and turned down the transparency. I was very surprised with how well it worked and was really happy with the results. Using Adobe Portfolio was a good choice when creating my personal portfolio. I began by experimenting with Behance but didn’t really like the blog post style layout and preferred the website style portfolio that Adobe portfolio offers. I worked with a minimal template and theme which compliments my personal aesthetic and was easy to arrange my work. Using the colour palette from my mood board for the logo, headings and text evoked my key words and overall design aesthetic. Although one of my key words is ‘vintage’, I chose a san-serif typeface for the headings and text for a young, inspired, and modern feel along with the reasoning that san-serif type is easier to read on screens where my portfolio will be viewed. I positioned my self-image on the home page as a form of ‘profile picture’ to allow the viewer to see me straight away and have an image in mind when exploring the rest of the portfolio. My intended audience is potential employers, clients, and other creatives for collaboration opportunities or to gain inspiration for their own work. With this in mind, I wanted to keep it clean and present my creative work in a professional way. The layout consists of four pages; self image, purpose statement, self map and mood board. The self-image is displayed as a cover image on the home page and can be viewed in full upon clicking on the image or self-image tab. The purpose statement is a short, concise statement that allows the audience to understand the reasoning behind my creative work. The self-map is a piece of creative work in which the audience can see my design aesthetic and skills through a personal visual design production.
