After conception, the zygote makes its way through the fallopian tubes to the uterus and begins cell division and growth. Once the zygote reaches the uterus, it becomes a blastocyst and begins the process of implantation into the wall of the uterus. Once the process of implantation is complete, hormone changes will stop the women's menstrual cycle and physical changes will occur.

The embryonic period lasts from the end of implantation to about 8 weeks. During this time, the mass of cells is now called an embryo. Most of the major organs and structures of the body begin to form during this period. For example the organs that begin to form are the lungs, the brain, the heart, and all other basic organs.

The Fetal Period is the last stage of development and begins after the 11th week and lasts until birth. This is the longest stage of development and major change and growth occur. During this period, the embryo has now become the fetus. Reproductive organs form during this period and gains in body weight occur. Also the body organs and structures that first appeared in the embryonic stage continue to grow and develop.

After 9 months, the fetus is ready to be born. Its reflexes are now coordinated so that it can now open and close its eyes, turn their heads, grasp with their hands, and can respond to light, sound, and touch. The fetus drops down to your pelvis so its head is down toward the birth canal to prepare for delivery. The average newborn is about 7 1/2 pounds (same size of a small pumpkin).

During this time, the mother can actually start to feel the fetus move. The fetus starts to grow fat under its thin skin, and features like its eyebrows, eyelids, and mouth are more developed. The face is fully formed and skin pigmentation emerges. The fetus' senses such as taste and touch begin to develop during this time. Its reproductive system also develops; if it's a boy, the testes have begun to descend and if it's a girl, the uterus and ovaries are in place, and the vagina is developed.
