A student named Deandre was suspended from school and told that he could not walk at graduation if he had dreadlocks. 

Summarize the most important information, ideas, facts, etc. presented in this article:

 “There is no dress code policy at the school that prohibits any cornrow or any other method of wearing the hair” This was said by Greg Poole, the superintendent. He also said that the school’s policy limits length and that Deandre would need to cut his hair before returning to school. 

 

Personal Reaction 

What was the most surprising/interesting thing you found out by reading this article?  

I was surprised that a school district would say something like that because it is a very controversial thing when dealing with another race and this obviously caused a lot of publicity to occur and now the school has made themselves look bad for being racist towards students. 

What question(s) do you have after reading this article?  What would you like to learn more about?  

I am wondering what the outcome of the situation was, and if Deandre had to cut his hair or not. 

I think this is a valuable lesson for teachers and faculty everywhere because it shows how one wrong word can cause a lot of backlash. For example, the board of education probably did not thing it would be wrong of them to suspend Deandre for his hair, but it was actually very offensive and hurtful to him and I learned that I should always make sure everything I implement in the classroom is very inclusive and doesn’t focus on a single gender or race.

This teacher asks the students every week to list 4 names of other kids that they want to sit by. She then studies the patterns, and sees who is lonely

What was the most surprising/interesting thing you found out by reading this article?  

This teacher can see whos being bullied, and whos doing the bullying

What question(s) do you have after reading this article?  What would you like to learn more about?  

I wonder what the teacher does with students who didn’t put down any names, would she call them to her desk and ask who they wanted to sit by, or just take a guess?

I think this is a very smart idea and something I will be keeping in mind for my future activities.

What was the most surprising/interesting thing you found out by reading this article?  

This surprised me because all throughout highschool I have thought that my score on the SAT was going to determine what college I get into, but now that I see this, I think I will be given more opportunities later in life that don’t revolve around my standardized test scores. 

What question(s) do you have after reading this article?  What would you like to learn more about?  

I am wondering how many other colleges will do this in the future.

I think this goes to show that a test score should not determine your future. Your GPA shows much more than a test that you took in one day.

Today I will write about my family so that I can describe what I know about families. I’ll know I’ve got it when I can write at least 2 sentences describing my family members and/or an activity we did together
