As Britannica states, "From her lair in a cave she devoured whatever ventured within reach, including six of Odysseus’s companions." Therefore, to avoid the whirlpool monster, Charybdis, our heroine decides to take his chances with the hungry beast. Though to ensure the safety of the rest of his crew, he makes the hard decision of sacrificing 6 of his men to the terrifying brute.

Scylla, before becoming the monster she is, was a fair maiden. Dating back, Glaucus, a sea god, fell in love with her. Glaucus asked a sorceress to make a love potion to make her fall in love with Glaucus. But the sorceress was also in love with Scylla so instead he made a potion that turned Scylla into an enormous creature.

When sailors would sail too close to her rocks, she would kill six men from the boat by snatching them and eating them fully.
