Storytime! I actually found this example yesterday and screen-shotted to send to a friend, before even starting this weeks work.

Yesterday night, my friends and I were watching youtube (not signed into my account) and we came across a video of Dua Lipa's Grammy's performance. I made a comment that I liked Dua Lipa's dancing and my friend made a comment that people on the internet used to make fun of her dancing and choreography because it was so bad.

Later in the night, I go on youtube on my own phone (this time it is signed into my account) and the very first video is this video comparing Dua Lipa's original dancing/choreography with her new and improved dancing.

Mind you, I am not a fan of Dua Lipa, don't listen to her music, and don't ever watch youtube videos about her. This recommendation was SO specific to what I was talking about just one hour prior, and the only explanation is that youtube somehow associated my youtube app on my roommates tv (which isn't signed into my account) with my personal youtube account, or that they were listening to our conversation.

As when I am on instagram I am looking a lot of Fashion pages and the occasional food account to try and find new recipes to cook. As I got further down the list though none of the other stuff seemed to relate as much, as I do not eat seafood. I am not a vegan, nor vegetarian, and I am more interesting in dogs that cats. They seem to get more random as the list goes down as the first 5 I would say I interact with photos and accounts related to them, but the bottom half I wouldn't interact with at all.

However, the results that were off are there because I've gotten into a cycle of seeing those ads all the time even when I don't want to, which probably makes it look like those are the things I am interested in. I don't know why I am still shown similar ads even though I don't click on or interact with the ads that don't interest me.

I don't ever buy anything off of instagram nor do I follow any beauty or cosmetic accounts so all the results related to that were a bit surprising. I do however follow a few fitness accounts and I love looking at real estate so those two I think were pretty spot on. I think every once in a while I get an add for a boutique type store, but I never click on them. I looked over a few other peoples results and I feel like a lot of the girls have very similar lists which leads me to believe these results aren't very tailored to the individual more to the gender identity of the user.

my ad interests on my most used platform (instagram) consist of cosmetics, beauty shoes, dresses, fragrances, shopping and fashion, luxury goods, shoes, clothing, and lastly boutiques. I definitely spend time looking at clothes and advertisements for items like shoes so I can see where this data is coming from

I knew Twitter had a section in its settings which attempts to track what some of your potential interests are for ad and "Topics" recommendations, so I decided to check this on an account I don't use often. Turns out, even with limited use, Twitter attaches a whole list of interests (this is only a small section). Some of these are fairly accurate, but there are many I have zero interest in, and some which I don't even know what they are. It feels like a very "cast a wide net" approach to personalization, which I can only assume is based on keywords in the tweets I've interacted with.

I immediately went over to instagram to see what ads I get the most because I feel like I get so many ads when scrolling through instagram. I laughed at the list mine gave me since I do a lot of online shopping and I love trying different hair products.

I was able to look at some of the targeted ads I receive and I must say it's not as accurate as I'd imagine it to be. Not to say its inaccurate but I felt as though a lot of these were pretty irrelevant to me. I had never gone through the data that instagram keeps, it was kind of creepy to see they remember almost everything. Now I understand why instagram takes up so much storage on my phone...

I decided to go on Instagram and see what ads were related to me. A lot of the things on the list I'm unfamiliar with. For example, I don't think I've ever listened to Chicano rap or had any interest in University of California, Riverside/Berkeley. However, some of the tags are vaguely related to what I'm in interested in. I saw Delta Delta Delta and while I don't really know about the sorority, I used to be in a different one so that could be the reason why it is popping up.
