At the end of the unit, the students have access a cumulative bank of knowledge that is compartmentalised. An activity my students recently engaged with was marking essays according to the criteria. We used a marking sheet using VCAA criteria but ‘broken down’ into student friendly language. I collected 7 comparative essays (from last year) of varying quality and students (individually and in groups) had to decide on a mark and give reasons. I gave time limits (to keep them on task) eg 5-7 mins silent reading and marking (for each essay) and then 5 mins small group discussion. We then had a quick class discussion where groups presented and we decided on a mark for that essay. This process was repeated for each essay.
