The region is formed by 12 villages and the capital is Gandesa.
The name of Terra Alta comes from the situation of territory taken off from the neighbouring regions of Ribera d'Ebre and Baix Ebre. It covers an area of 743.36 km² and has a population of 11,483 inhabitants (2018).
Agriculture is the economic base of the Terra Alta and only 42% of its area is cultivated.
In the Terra Alta there is little industry, the most outstanding is that of the winemaking, made especially in the cooperatives.
