A number of social determinants of health put these groups at a disadvantaged position. What makes it even worse is that there is very little or no data that sheds light on the experiences of racialized Canadians, which makes profering effective solutions very difficult.

There have been cases where these disadvantaged minority groups have had to travel farther than necessary just to target health care facilities where they would feel safe and receive culturally competent care. More so, racialized Canadians find it difficult and sometimes impossible to find therapeutic resources that are consistent to their experiences. This should not be the case as they stem from systemic racism.

The video re-emphasized and provided more information about what I already learnt in class and read in my textbook related to the subject. Hearing the statistics of Infant Deaths and SIDS in Indigenous people, as well as other marginalized people, was shocking. We need more education and training regarding cultural differences. Although I know that people experience racism daily, this video has made me realize some of the many factors that contribute to this, things I have never thought about before. Also, as stated many times throughout this video, the prevalence of poverty, and the far-reaching affects, need to be addressed. We, as a society, need to do better.

There was a lot of hard hitting statistics and facts. Especially the point at the beginning about people of other races and cultures feeling scared to seek medical attention because of how common mistreatment in healthcare is. The TED talk near the end was said so casually but really sad that not only Caribbean women, but all women of colour and different race struggle to find supports related to their culture. As a privileged white woman, it is very difficult to imagine the beautiful, exciting experience of pregnancy being such a scary and risky experience. It is sickening and unfair. It is shocking in a way that fuels me to want to go that extra mile to ensure every person and patient in our lives is cared about and supported, especially from a health care stand point! We as a society need to do better but educational videos like this are great starting points and ways of opening our eyes and setting the standard. 

A positive note that was interesting, is that Canada is the leader in Maternal Health!

I would have thought that an indigenous person living in an urban community would have easier (or better) access to health care, so it's crazy to me that a mothers geographic location doesn't actually make much difference.

I think the Mommy Monitor Program is really neat. Mommy Monitor works with moms to meet individual needs to reduce stress, provide education, and encourage safe and happy pregnancies, so it is a great resource for pregnant moms and families. There is lots of studies online done in the past to support this claim as well. Women of colour, indigenous and black, for example, are often faced with micro aggressions of prejudice. Everyone should be treated the same with loving, caring, respect. There has to be more specific resources for different races. 
I know I have been treated very poorly on various hospital trips over the last couple years. If them healthcare providers were more caring and had some compassion it would have went a long way.

It was unnerving to hear in Quebec/Ontario that they are 3 to 4 times more likely to experience a life threatening complication. Racialized groups are more likely to live in poverty. Poverty, being one of the main principles of the social determinants of health, has many impacts that may not be perceived by the health care provider. Racism can be a risk factor for many reasons, most of which are barriers presented to racialized women in Canada.

The indigenous aspect was very thought provoking, in that the assumption is they receive lesser health care due to their geographic location. However, the statistics do not waver greatly for indigenous women who have moved from reservations into more urban locations; the health outcomes do not improve greatly, implying that this issue goes much deeper than just location. The data collected regarding indigenous communities over the years have helped to point out these disparities, but has not inspired any widespread change; proving that this issue still requires diligent examination and exploration.
