We decided to buy a house together because it would be cheaper. We were talking about our salaries and our futures and it was overall fun.

Long-Term
Last summer, my family decided to rent a lake house in Indiana. I invited my four best friends to come along. A few days in, we went on a pontoon boat and when we were about to go back to the house, the boat broke down and we had to call someone to come pick us up from the middle of the lake. This memory has been stored and I am able to retrieve it now almost a year later.

Long-term
When I was little, we always went to Florida every summer because my family owns a condo in Bonita Springs. One summer, we had many people down there at once and we even had some family friends and my grandparents that were staying nearby. I remember going to our family friend’s hotel that they were staying at right on the beach later at night. We were standing around and all of a sudden a ghost crab comes out of nowhere and walks in the middle of us. Some of us screamed and ran away while others ran after it. I will always remember that trip and all the memories that I made with those people. This is a part of automatic encoding because it did not take effort for me to remember it, I just remember it unconsciously.

The director of the Alzheimer’s Disease (a disease that affects memory) Research Center at Columbia University said that memory lapses are necessary for the function of a healthy brain. Forgetting can benefit the cognitive and creative abilities. Forgetting useless things can help to not interfere with learning. The benefits to forgetting do not apply to pathological forgetting caused by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

We use our memory, problem-solving, and thinking skills every day. Whether we are using our imagination to think of new and creative ways to do things through divergent thinking or by using logic and facts to get to an answer through convergent thinking, both of these ways of thinking allows us to get to a solution when we are having problems. We also use different strategies to solve problems. Our brain is able to find ways to solve things through algorithm, heuristics, trial and error, and insight. All of these ways allow us to get through day to day activities and issues we might face. Our memory lets us remember important factors in our life. We are able to remember things in different ways. Sometimes it is not even consciously made (automatic processing) and sometimes it is (effortful processing). Overall, these things make up how humans live in our day to day lives.

1. Mine - Taylor Swift - I first listened to this on YouTube and I watched the music video over and over again. I probably first heard over ten years ago by now. I just have always loved the lyrics and the music video and overall the meaning of the song. I’ve heard this song probably a million times so I could definitely sing it fully.
2. You’re Gonna Go Far - Noah Karan - I first listened to this song a few months ago. Admittedly, on TikTok. But this song has always had a place in my heart. I think with the end of high school coming close along with my brother leaving for a few months to travel, it has really hit home. That’s why the lyrics are so clear to me.
3. Dawns - Zach Bryan - I also first listened to this song just a few months ago. I think just the style of music and the lyrics just make it such a good song. I just think some of the lyrics remind me of things so thats why i remember them.
4. Never Grow Up - Taylor Swift - I first listened to this song when I was really little. Probably around the same time as when I heard the song ‘Mine’. The lyrics are just so good to relate to as a girl growing up, especially now in the later years of high school. So the repetition and meaning of the lyrics stick with me.
5. Hopelessly Devoted to You - Grease - I first listened to this song while watching the movie Grease with my Grandma probably when I was like 7. We would watch this movie so many times together and this entire movie holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my Grandma. Since she has passed, I listen to the song every once in a while and I still know the lyrics cause it was our favorite song out of the movie.
