After completing a lesson, I would ask the students for a written response about what we learned in class today. In their ticket out the door, I will be looking for key concepts/details that were covered in the lesson so that I can assess if they understood it. They would hand it to me as they leave the classroom.

A fun and creative way to assess students is by having them create a business card about a specific person they are learning about. On the business card, students would draw a picture of there person and add a description of the person. In the description, students would list any facts or accomplishments of the person. The business card is to be created as if the student were actually that person.

They will have 4 answer choices and a limited amount of time to choose the correct answer. This form of assessment requires students to have access to technology.

Geddit is a website/app that is similar to kahoot.it but more private. Students are able to answer questions privately without feeling pressured or embarrassed if they get an answer wrong. Teachers are also able to receive each students data and view what they may have missed. This data can then be used to either pair a strong student with someone struggling or to send the struggling student resources that will help them on their area of weakness. This formative assessment requires access to technology.

This is a great assessment that can work in all grade levels. In the younger grades, the teacher can hand out a worksheet with a couple things within the same category and one that does not belong. Students will cross out the one that does not belong. In the older grades, the teacher can write on the board names of people or places they have learned about and one that does not belong. Students will need to identify on their own which does not belong and state why it does not belong.

Exit tickets can easily be modified to assess students in grades like kindergarten and first grade. Rather than having to write about what they learned, students can be given an exit ticket where they circle the answer. For example, each exit ticket will have the same question at the top of it. The teacher can read the question aloud for the students and prompt them. Students will then circle the answer(s) on their own.

Another great assessment for all grade levels is the red hand, blue hand, green hand. In this assessment, the teacher will ask a few questions regarding content learned in the lesson and students will raise a colored hand to answer. Students will need to be provided with these hand cut outs. A red hand means "no/incorrect", a blue hand means "I do not know", and a green hand means "yes/correct." This assessment will give the teacher a general idea of what may or may not need to worked on.

In four corners, the teacher will ask the students a few questions and provide them with answer choices. Typically, there are four corners in a classroom. Each corner will represent four different answer choices. For example, corners can either be: A, B, C, and D, or they can be strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. The middle of the classroom can be left for students who are unsure of the answer.

The catch is, they have to write the postcard as if they were someone else that they are learning about. For example, students can pretend to be Eleanor Roosevelt writing a card to her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
